MIAMI, Fla. – The No. 7 Washburn Lady Blues shook off a dismal first half to rally for a 57-45 win over Cameron in their frist game of the Cruzin' Classic hosted by Barry University. Washburn (7-1) will take on Central Oklahoma on Thursday at 1 p.m. CST.
Washburn was limited to six field goals in the opening frame in 34 attempts. Cameron (1-9) was just as cold as the Lady Aggies connected on only five field goals in 18 attempts. Washburn took a 25 to 17 advantage on the glass to the halftime locker room, but Cameron held a 16 to 15 lead at the break. Washburn held the Lady Aggies without a field goal for the final 4:27 of the first half.
In the second half, the teams traded baskets to open the stanza and the Lady Aggies pushed their lead to four at 23-19 with 16:55 left to play. With the Lady Blues trailing 24-21,
Corkey Stiger started a 15-0 run to propel Washburn to a 36-24 lead with 11:59 to play. Cameron would not get with 10 the rest of the game as Washburn finished with the 12-point win.
Stiger led the Lady Blues with 15 points as the only Washburn player to finish in double figures.
Amanda Holmes had eight and
Janice Bright and
Brette Ulsaker each had seven points.
Washburn warmed up to 54 percent shooting in the second half hitting 14 of 26 attempts from the field, including 11 of 13 from the free throw line in the second half.
Washburn out rebounded the Lady Aggies 42 to 28 on the evening.
Notes: The 15 points scored by the Lady Blues in the first half against Cameron was the lowest point total in a half since Washburn scored 15 in second half against Missouri Western in an 83-46 loss on Jan. 20, 2001 in Topeka ... The 57 points was the second lowest Lady Blues total of the season following the 47 they scored against Drury 10 days ago … Washburn improved to 6-0 all-time against Cameron …
