No. 21 Lady Blues soccer team to face Hornets in Turnpike Tussle

Setting the Scene:
The No. 21 ranked Washburn Lady Blues will open their defense of the MIAA regular season championship as they will travel to Emporia, Kan., to take on the Hornets in the first edition of the Turnpike Tussle for the 2007 season. The Lady Blues are 2-1-1 after picking up a pair of wins in Weatherford, Okla., over host school Southwestern Oklahoma State and No. 25 ranked West Texas A&M. The Hornets are 0-4 this season after falling to Angelo State 4-3 last time out on Sept. 2.

About the Hornets:
Quick Kicks: Emporia State fell to 0-4 this season after dropping two matches in Ada, Okla., each by one goal. The Hornets fell to East Central 2-1 and then to Angelo State 4-3.
About ESU: The Hornets are led in scoring by Topeka native Sarah Tetuan, who has scored two goals this season. ESU has three others with one goal each.
About the coach: Jim Schneiderhahn is 3-19-1 in his second year at ESU and 42-62-7 in his seventh year as a head coach. He came to ESU after serving as an assistant coach at Tulane University. He was the head coach at Benedictine from 2000-04.
Last meeting: Oct. 6, 2006 - W 3-0 EMPORIA, Kan. - The No. 22 Washburn Lady Blues got back to their winning ways by sweeping the season series with Emporia State topping their arch-rivals 3-0. It was the fourth straight win for the Lady Blues over the Hornets.
In the ninth minute of the match, Jessica Mainz scored her ninth goal of the season on a an assist from Traci Nigg in front of the goal. Mainz has had all four match-winning goals for the Lady Blues against the Hornets in the series history.
Nigg put the Lady Blues up 2-0 at the 19:01 mark of the first half on a pass from Meagan Horvath from outside the box. It was her third goal of the season. Courtney Russell scored her second goal of the year on a crossing pass from Ashley Taylor at the 38:07 mark of the first half to round out the scoring for Washburn.
Jenna Hatlestad picked up her fifth shutout of the season with two saves in goal for the Lady Blues as Washburn out shot ESU 23 to 7 in the match.
With the win, the Lady Blues improved to 11-1-2 and 6-1-1 in the MIAA. The 11 wins ties the Washburn record for most wins in a season after the Lady Blues recorded 11 in their third year of the program's history. The Hornets fell to 3-10-0 and 1-7-0 in the MIAA.

Lady Blues Soccer History:
Washburn is 37-31-15 (.531) all-time in its fifth season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 22-24-11 (.481). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 18-14-5 and they are 12-16-7 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 5-1-3.

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The No. 13 ranked Washburn Lady Blues scored three goals with a 7:08 span in the first half en route to a 4-1 win over No. 25 ranked West Texas A&M on Sunday afternoon.
Jessica Mainz scored the first of her two goals on the afternoon on a header from Danielle Ayala at the 20:12 mark of the half. Six minutes and forty seconds later, Angela Wiseman scored the first goal of her Washburn career off a feed from Lauren Lawless to put the Lady Blues up 2-0.
Mainz pushed the lead to 3-0 :28 seconds later off a pass from Traci Nigg. The :28 seconds between goals by two different Lady Blues set a new school record for the quickest back-to-back goals in Lady Blues history topping the :48 seconds between goals by Lauren Schwindt and Jamie Francis on Oct.15, 2004.
The Lady Buffs cut the lead to 3-1 in the third minute of the second half as Cassie Hisler found Samantha Calcote in the penalty box for the score.
In the 64th minute, Ayala scored her first goal at Washburn unassisted from 6-yards out.
Jenny Persons picked up the win in goal for the Lady Blues as she recorded eight saves allowing the one goal.

Lady Blues in the National Poll:
The Lady Blues entered the 2007 season ranked No. 13 in the National Soccer Coaches Association National Preseason Poll which was released the week before the season began. The Lady Blues finished the 2006 season ranked No. 12 in the final poll. Washburn has been ranked in the last 11 national polls earning a ranking as high as No. 10 in the final regular season poll in 2006.

National Soccer Coaches Association Regional Rankings:
The Washburn Lady Blues were ranked No. 3 in the Central Regional rankings by the NSCAA which were released this week. The NSCAA poll, however does not reflect the rankings for the NCAA regional rankings poll which determine the teams qualifying for the national tournament.

Up next: The Lady Blues will continue MIAA play as they travel to Central Missouri on Sept. 14 then return home for a match the following day against Missouri Western at 7 p.m. in Yager Stadium.
