MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabods knocked off No. 16 Northwest Missouri 61-56 in Bearcat Arena. The win snapped a four-game winning streak by the Bearcats over the Ichabods. Washburn will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at Fort Hays State.
Washburn hit three of four free throws in the final nine seconds to lock up the five-point win.
With Washburn (10-3, 2-2 MIAA) hanging on to an 11-point, 37-26 lead into the break, the Bearcats (10-3, 2-2 MIAA) cut the lead to six at 42-36 after back to back field goals by Andrais Thornton with 14:11 to go in the game.
Both teams were scoreless for the next 3:50 until Northwest cut the lead to four following an Ichabod turnover. The lead was cut to two at 42-40 after another Ichabod turnover with 8:49 to go in the half.
Washburn snapped a scoreless streak of more than seven minutes as
Brady Sisk pushed the lead back to three at 43-40 with 8:31 left.
Northwest tied the score on a 3-pointer, but Washburn regained the lead at 45-40 on a Sisk jumper in the paint. The Bearcats' back-to-back 3's by Lance Sullivan pushed Northwest's lead to 49-45 with 6:35 to play.

Sullivan scored his seventh and eighth straight points for the Bearcats after a pair of free throws. Following a media time, Washburn tied the score on a Snyder stick back after a missed Meile 3-point attempt.
After both teams traded possessions with no results, Byers hit a 3-pointer to put Washburn up 54-51 with 2:15 remaining.
The Bearcats missed a 3-pointer after an Ichabod turnover Washburn took possession Williams hit a lay-up off an Angel Santiago pass with 1:10 left putting Washburn up five at 56-51.
The Ichabods missed the front end of a one-and-one, but the Bearcats misfired on their ensuing possession. With 29.7 seconds left in the game, Meile hit both attempts to put the Ichabods up 58-51. Mose Howard hit a 3-pointer for the Bearcats with 18.4 seconds remaining to cut the lead to four at 58-54. The Ichabods hit 3 of their 4 remaining free throws to lock up the game.
To open the game, Washburn jumped out to a 12-0 lead as the Bearcats were held without a field goal until the 15:50 mark of the half. Washburn pushed the lead to 21-9 on a
Brady Sisk stick back with 11:06 to play in the first half.
The Bearcats came back with back-to-back buckets drawing with eight at 21-13 with 9:36 left.
After an intentional foul on the Ichabods, Northwest hit a pair of free throws with 7:58 left cutting the lead to 23-16.
The Bearcats pulled with seven at 33-26, Sisk picked up an offensive board and turned it into a 35-26 with 2:54 to go in the first half.
Washburn was 16 of 29 in the first half hitting 55 percent of their shots holding the Bearcats to 8 of 27 from the field.
The Ichabods had a trio lead the team in Sisk, Byers and Meile who each scored 13.
James Williams scored 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Sullivan led the Bearcats with 17 points.
Washburn cooled off from their 55 percent shooting in the first half to 8 of 25 in the second half finishing at 44 percent. Washburn held the Bearcats to 19 of 59 shooting from the field for a 32 percent clip, including limiting the Bearcats to 5 of 30 from 3-point land.
Washburn out rebounded the Bearcats 44 to 31 for the game.
Notes: Washburn pulled within one game of the Bearcats in the all-time series with Northwest holding a slim 87-86 lead all-time…the nine rebounds for Williams was a career-high…Washburn improved to 11-7 all-time in games at Northwest grabbing their first win in Bearcat Arena since Feb. 16, 2005 in an 80-69 win.
