Last-second 3 sinks Ichabods at Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. - With no time left on the clock Tyrone Evans hit a 3-pointer for Fort Hays State to give the Tigers an 84-83 win over Washburn Wednesday night. The loss dropped the Ichabods to 10-4 and 2-3 in the MIAA while the Tigers improved to 9-4 and 2-3. Washburn will return home after a three-game road streak to host Truman Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Lee Arena.

Mario Scott led the Ichabods with a season-high 20 points off 6-of-7 shooting from the field, while Brady Sisk also reached a season-high with 19 points off 8-of-13 shooting. Washburn shot 53 percent from the field while the Tigers were 52 percent. FHSU was a hot 47 percent from the 3-point line while Washburn was just 52 percent from the free throw line.

Angel Santiago, starting in his first game, scored 12 points and Andrew Meile reached double figures with 10 points.

The Ichabods were down by 11 at 12:32 of the second half and then 10, 62-52 at the 10:22 mark. Washburn then went on a 12-2 run to tie the score at 64-64. After giving up the lead again to FHSU Scott made a lay-up to give the Ichabods their first lead of the night at 68-67 with 6:41 remaining.

Fort Hays State then jumped back up by as much as six before Washburn came back and led by three on a pair of free throws from Scott with 26 seconds remaining. LaTravis Turner answered with a basket and then he stole the in-bounds pass and then got fouled and made a free throw to tie the game.

On the next possesion Santiago made a free throw and then on his miss Scott stole the rebound from FHSU. He was then fouled and made one to put the Ichabods up by two points. He missed the next shot but Kyle Snyder got the rebound. After a timeout he threw away the inbounds pass to give the Tigers and Evans a chance for the win.

Evans was 10 of 18 from the field with eight 3-pointers for 28 points. Jeffries had 20 points.
