Lady Blues return home to face Bulldogs in only second home game since Nov. 26

No. 8 Washburn to face Bulldogs in 1st home game in 2 weeks
The No. 8 Washburn Lady Blues (12-2, 4-1 MIAA) return to Lee Arena for only their second home game since Nov. 26 and their first conference game at home in two weeks to face Truman (11-3, 3-2 MIAA) at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19. Washburn rebounded from their first MIAA loss of the season with a 70-53 win over Fort Hays State and the Bulldogs dropped a 98-61 decision at Emporia State last time out. Following the game with the Bulldogs, Washburn will hit the road again for two more games - at Southwest Baptist on Jan. 22 and at Pittsburg State on Jan. 26 - before returning to Lee Arena to play seven of their final 10 MIAA games.

The coaches . . .
Washburn head coach Ron McHenry has posted a 200-39 (.837) record overall and 102-27 (.787) record in the MIAA with four MIAA regular season championships from 2003-06 and the 2005 NCAA National Championship. McHenry has the highest winning percentage (.837) in MIAA history of coaches who have at least 200 wins.
He was named the Lady Blues head coach prior to the 2000-01 season. He is second among active women's NCAA Division II Coaches in winning percentage. McHenry was named the MIAA's Coach of the Year in 2005 and in 2006 and the Division II Bulletin National Coach of the Year in 2005. (complete bio on page 2 of notes.)
Truman head coach John Sloop is in his eighth year as head coach of the Bulldog women's basketball program. He has compiled an 82-121 (.406) overall record and has a 52-22 mark in non-conference games. Sloop is 2-14 against Washburn.
Sloop previously served as an assistant coach under Truman men's basketball head coach Jack Schrader, helping guide the team to the NCAA Division II Final Four during the 1998-99 season. He also worked at Missouri State University and Saint Louis University at the Division I level.

Last Time Out for the Lady Blues . . .

Jan. 16, 2008 - #8 Washburn 70, Fort Hays State 53 • HAYS, Kan. – The No. 8 Washburn Lady Blues rebounded from its first MIAA loss of the season and head coach Ron McHenry picked up his 200th win on the Lady Blues bench in a 70-53 win over Fort Hays State. Coupled with a one-point loss by Northwest Missouri, the Lady Blues have moved back into a first place tie with the Bearcats and with Southwest Baptist. Washburn will play host to Truman at 1:30 p.m. in Lee Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Washburn (12-2, 4-1 MIAA) trailed early 4-0 and 9-5 and 11-7 to the Lady Tigers (7-7, 1-4 MIAA) before taking for good at the 13:22 mark of the first half on a Regiane Araujo lay up putting Washburn up 14-13. Washburn stretched the lead to nine after back-to-back jumpers by Corkey Stiger with 8:07 left in the first half.
The Lady Blues would lead by as many as 15 in the half before taking a 40-27 lead into the break.
In the second half, Washburn pulled out to a 15-point lead midway through the period and finished with a 17-point win while topping Fort Hays State for the ninth straight time.
Stiger led a trio of Lady Blues with 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting. She scored 14 in the first half on 5 of 6 shooting from the field.
Araujo scored a career-high 12 points on 6 of 9 shooting and Karla Tailele had 11 points hitting 3 of 6 3-pointers.
Hope Gregory led the Lady Blues with five rebounds.
Naomi Bancroft led the Lady Tigers with 15 points.
Washburn held Fort Hays State to 22 of 58 from the field (38 percent) while the Lady Blues shot over 50 percent for the second time this season hitting 26 of 49 attempts from the field.

Notes from the Fort Hays State Game . . .
The Lady Blues improved to 34-25 all-time against Fort Hays State winning the ninth straight game in the series … Ron McHenry is now 200-39 all-time in his eighth season at Washburn … Washburn is now 28-10 following a loss under McHenry … Washburn is now 681-322 in 1,003 games all-time … the Lady Blues will take on Truman on Saturday in only their second home game since Nov. 26 … under McHenry, Washburn improves to 59-2 all-time when shooting 50 percent or better … Washburn won their ninth straight game in Hays … the .531 shooting percentage was the Lady Blues best performance this season … the 49 field goal attempts was the lowest mark by the Lady Blues this season ... the 29 rebounds were also the lowest total by Washburn this season – six below the previous low of 35 against Evangel on Nov. 26.

Washburn/Truman series notes . . .
Saturday's meeting will be the 41st all-time. The Lady Blues lead the all-time series with Truman 32-8. The Lady Blues have won the last ten games in the series. The Bulldogs' last win in the series was Feb. 1, 2003 season by a score of 76-71 in Kirksville. The Lady Blues have won the last 20 games in Topeka as the Bulldogs won in their first trip to Topeka during the 1979-80 season, but have lost every game since then. The teams have met twice in the MIAA Tournament with the Lady Blues winning 77-48 in the quarterfinals in Kansas City on March 6, 2003 and again in the quarterfinals last season on March 2, 2006 in a 63-36 win in Kansas City.

Last Meeting Between Washburn and Truman . . .

(Feb. 10, 2007) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 4 Washburn Lady Blues won their 20th straight game against the Truman Bulldogs in Lee Arena as they scored a season-high 94 points in a 94-63 win. With the win, Washburn improves to 21-2 and 12-2 in the MIAA while the Bulldogs fell to 8-15 and 3-11. Washburn will back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Northwest Missouri starting at 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Blues shot 49 percent in the first half hitting 16 of 33 shots as both Brooke Ubelaker and Cindy Keeley paced Washburn with 10 points each. Keeley was one rebound shy of securing a double double with five of her nine rebounds coming on the offensive end. Washburn pushed their lead to as many as 15 in the first half taking a 47-34 lead into the break at halftime.
In the second half, Washburn upped their shooting to 54 percent in the half connecting on 19 of 35 shots from the field and Jessica Aebi was a perfect 4 of 4 including nailing both 3-point attempts scoring 12 second half points.
Washburn held the Bulldogs without a field goal for the final 4:22 of the half and 33 percent shooting from the field.
Ubelaker and Corkey Stiger led six Lady Blues in double figure scoring with 19 each. Stiger was 8 of 13 from the field and scored 13 in the first half. Keeley recorded her second double double of the season and her career with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Also scoring 12 was Aebi. Amanda Holmes and Nikki Holmes each has 11 points. The 11 points for Nikki Holmes was a Washburn high.
Washburn outran the Bulldogs outscoring them 20-0 in fast break points while dominating the boards 43 to 28.
Truman had four starters in double figures led by Julia Montebello's 17 points.
 
About Truman . . .
Truman is off to one of the best starts in school history at 11-3 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA. The Bulldogs are leading the MIAA in steals and scoring margin. Georgia Mueller is the second leading scorer and rebounder in the MIAA at 21.7 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Mueller is averaging 23.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game in MIAA action. Candace McGee is the only other Bulldog averaging in double figures at 12.4 ppg.

Last time out for Truman . . .
 (Jan. 16, 2008) -- Jan. 16, 2008 - The #19 Emporia State Lady Hornets hit 14 three-pointers Wednesday night as the Bulldog women's basketball team dropped a 98-61 decision at White Auditorium in Emporia, Kan. Junior forward Georgia Mueller was the only Bulldog in double-figures, finishing with 21 points.
Truman (11-3, 3-2 MIAA) had not spent four minutes on the floor before they found themselves down 13-0 on a barrage of three-pointers - two by Andrea Leiker and one by Michelle Stueve. Leiker finished with a team-high 21 points while Steuve tacked on 20 points, six rebounds and four assists in just 25 minutes.
In addition to the starters, the Bulldogs did get production off the bench as sophomore guard Laura Joya joined senior guards Katie Fowler and Candace McGee with eight points, and freshman forward Malorie Kiecker added six more. Mueller finished with a team-high seven rebounds, and three Bulldogs shared the team-high with two assists.
Emporia State (10-4, 3-2) outrebounded the 'Dogs 50-30 and garnered 18 offensive rebounds.

#3 - Brette Ulsaker - G - Four assists against Fort Hays State tied a career high … has hit 3 of 7 3-pointers in second half of games this season.
#4 - Amanda Holmes - F - Averaging 7.2 points, 5.8 rebounds in five career games against Truman … 18 of 29 from the free throw line in the first half of games this season (.621) and 37 of 62 (.597) in the second half.
#11 - Renata Germano - C - Four of nine from the field in MIA play this season.
#13 - Jessica Mainz - G - Five steals against FHSU tied a season high … played 39 minutes against FHSU tying a career-high (also played 39 against ESU earlier this season).

In their 24th season in Lee Arena, the Lady Blues are 294-55 (.841) overall at home. The Lady Blues have won their last 16 home games.
The longest winning streak was 44 games from Dec. 1, 1990 to March 20, 1993.
The Lady Blues have won 35 straight regular season non-conference games in Lee Arena. The last defeat by a non-conference team in the regular season was to Missouri-St. Louis in a 59-51 setback on Dec. 30, 2000.
Washburn is 102-10 (.910) in home games under Ron McHenry.

WU in the national poll . . .
The Washburn Lady Blues fell four spots from No. 4 to No. 8 in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll which was released Jan. 15. Washburn was ranked No. 6 in the preseason poll which was released on Oct. 31. The Lady Blues were ranked No. 8 in the final poll of the 2007-08 season after finishing with a 29-4 overall record. The poll marks the 95th consecutive week the Lady Blues have been ranked.

Lady Blues Tip Ins . . .

Corkey Stiger moved into eighth all-time at Washburn in 3-pointers with 87. She need sixmore to move into seventh place all-time.
• Stiger's 263 3-point attempts is seventh all-time.
Amanda Holmes is 14th all-time with 207 free throws made and 14th as well in free throw attempts with 310.
• Holmes is 15th all-time in rebounds at Washburn with 497. She needs 10 to move into 14th all-time and 11 to move into 13th.
• Holmes' 92 career blocked shots is fourth all-time at Washburn needing 10 to move into sole possession of third place.
• The Lady Blues have not allowed an opponent to shoot above 50 percent in a game in a streak of 85 contests - Angelo State was the last opponent to hit 50 percent of their shots in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Springfield when they connected on 26 of 52 shots on March 12, 2005.  Under McHenry, the Lady Blues are 194-35 when their opponent shoots under 50 percent overall. Ron McHenry won his 200th game in his 239 attempt.
• The Lady Blues are 170-8 when outshooting their opponent.
• Washburn is 65-2 when holding their opponents under 50 points or less. The lone loss was to Missouri Western on Jan. 27, 2007 in a 49-47 loss in St. Joseph, Mo.
• Washburn is 70-0 when they score at least 80 points.
• Washburn is 191-8 when leading with 5 minutes remaining in the game.
