Lady Blues travel to SBU to face Lady Bearcats in MIAA Tuesday action

No. 8 Washburn road warriors return to highway to face Lady Bearcats . . . 

The No. 8 Washburn Lady Blues (13-2, 5-1 MIAA) coming off only their second home game since Nov. 26 in an 83-60 win over Truman, return to the road again for two straight away from Lee Arena beginning with a trip to Bolivar, Mo., to face Southwest Baptist Tuesday, Jan., 22 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Bearcats (12-3, 4-2 MIAA) fell at Missouri Southern on Saturday last time out 58-55. Following the game with the SBU, Washburn will hit the road again heading to Pittsburg State on Jan. 26 - before returning to Lee Area to play seven of their final 10 MIAA games at home.

The coaches . . .
Washburn head coach Ron McHenry has posted a 201-39 (.837) record overall and 103-27 (.792) record in the MIAA with four MIAA regular season championships from 2003-06 and the 2005 NCAA National Championship. McHenry has the highest winning percentage (.837) in MIAA history of coaches who have at least 200 wins.
He was named the Lady Blues head coach prior to the 2000-01 season. He is second among active women's NCAA Division II Coaches in winning percentage. McHenry was named the MIAA's Coach of the Year in 2005 and in 2006 and the Division II Bulletin National Coach of the Year in 2005. (complete bio on page 2 of notes.)
Southwest Baptist head coach Jim Middleton is in his 14th year at SBU, where he has compiled a record of 230-151 (.605) and is the winningest coach in the school's history. He has led the Lady Bearcats to NCAA tournament play six times in his tenure, highlighted by a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2000. Middleton is 9-17 against Washburn.

Jan. 19, 2008 - #8 Washburn 83, Truman 60 • TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 8 ranked Washburn Lady Blues jumped out to a 15-0 lead to begin the game and never looked back in an 83-60 over Truman Saturday afternoon in Lee Arena. The win was the 21st in a row over the Bulldogs in Topeka and the 11th straight in the series. Washburn (13-2, 5-1 MIAA) will travel to Bolivar, Mo., to take on Southwest Baptist on Tuesday night starting at 5:30 p.m.
Washburn held the Bulldogs scoreless for the first 5:53 of the game jumping out to the 15-0 lead, however Truman got themselves back in the game ripping off an 11-0 run of their own with 10:43 left in the first half. Corkey Stiger hit back-to-back 3-pointers stretching the lead to 10 at 21-11 scoring her 15th point of the night tying the entire Truman team with 15 points each.
The Lady Blues did not let Truman within eight points the remainder of the half and finished period on a 13-3 run the final 5:48 of the half taking a 44-23 lead into the break. Washburn was 15 of 31 from the field in the opening half while holding the Bulldogs to 7 of 25 while outrebounding the Bulldogs 24 to 16.
In the second half, Washburn outscored the Bulldogs 39 to 37 taking the 23-point win.
Stiger led the Lady Blues with 19 points scoring 17 in the first half playing only nine minutes in the second half. Stiger finished 6 of 9 from the field hitting 2 of 4, 3-point attempts. Amanda Holmes recorded her 13th double double at Washburn with 12 points and a career-high tying 14 rebounds. Hope Gregory finished with 10 points hitting 5 of 7 shots from the field.
Georgia Mueller led the Bulldogs with 25 points on 9 of 15 shooting hitting all three 3-point attempts.
Candace McGee and 12 points and Laura Joya had 11 points.
Washburn outrebounded the Bulldogs 46 to 31 holding Truman to 17 of 52 shooting for the game (32.7 percent) while the Lady Blues finished 29 of 66 (43.9 percent).

Notes from the Truman Game

The Lady Blues improved to 33-8 all-time against the Bulldogs … Washburn is 22-1 against the Bulldogs in Topeka winning all 21 meetings in Lee Arena (Washburn was 1-1 against the Bulldogs in Whiting Fieldhouse) … Washburn's bench outscored the Truman bench 39 to 15 … the Lady Blues are 71-0 when they score at least 80 points under Ron McHenryAmanda Holmes recorded her 500th rebound pushing her career total to 511 moving her into 12th all-time at Washburn … the 83 points was one point shy of a season high (84 against Baker) … the 66 field goal attempts was a season high … Jessica Mainz has had five steals in three of the last four games … the Lady Blues are now 295-55 all-time in Lee Arena and have won their last 17 games.

Washburn/Southwest Baptist series notes . . .
Tuesday's meeting is the 35th with the Lady Bearcats. Washburn is 24-10 all-time against the Lady Bearcats and Washburn has won the last 15 overall meetings in the series. Washburn has won the last seven meetings over Southwest Baptist in Topeka and they have won the last six in Bolivar. The Lady Blues also have two wins over SBU in the MIAA Tournament quarterfinals in Kansas City on March 3, 2006 and last season on March 3, 2007 in the last meeting in the series. SBU's last win in the series was on Feb. 3, 2001 in a 73-65 win in Topeka.

Last Meeting Between Washburn and Southwest Baptist . . .

(March 3, 2007) KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The No. 6 Washburn Lady Blues won their seventh straight MIAA Postseason Tournament game while improving to 25-3 overall on the season advancing to the semifinals in a 78-53 win over Southwest Baptist.
The Lady Blues shrugged off a sluggish start in the first half after falling behind by as many as four three different times to eventually build a lead at 28-22 with 1:28 left in the half taking the six point lead into the break. The Lady Blues were 11 of 24 from the field, but struggled behind the 3-point line connecting on only 1 of 12 attempts. Washburn held Southwest Baptist to 9 of 27 shooting.
In the second half, SBU cut the lead to five at 30-25, 34 seconds into the second half, but the Lady Blues used a 12-0 over the next 3:59 pushing the lead to 42-25 to put the game out of reach as SBU would not get closer than 15 the rest of the way. With the score at 42-27, Washburn ripped off another 21-6 run increasing the lead to 30 leading to the 25-point win.
The Lady Blues warmed up to shoot 58 percent in the second half hitting 21 of 36 attempts. SBU's field goal percentage jumped to 39 percent after hitting 11 of 28 attempts.
Washburn was led by Corkey Stiger who scored 19 points off the bench hitting 9 of 14 from the field while collecting five assists with three steals. Cindy Keeley scored 13 and Nikki Holmes scored 10. Amanda Holmes tied a career high with 13 rebounds just missing a double double with 9 points.
SBU was led by Livia Brito and Cortney Shewmaker who each scored 15.
 
About Southwest Baptist . . .
The Southwest Baptist Lady Bearcats had their four-game winning streak snapped last time out by Missouri Southern on the road 55-50.
Erika Souza leads the Lady Bearcats with 19.9 ppg, including 21.5 ppg in MIAA contests. Souza has also recorded a team-best 69 assists on the season. Courtney Creed is second with 12.1 ppg, while Kelly Reinkemeyer averages a team-high 5.5 rebounds a game.

Last time out for the Lady Bearcats  . . .

(Jan. 19 2008) -- JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern Lions led by as many as 16 points in the first half and held on to defeat Southwest Baptist, 58-55, Saturday night (Jan. 19) at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
A 22-0 outburst in the first half gave the Lions (12-3, 3-3 MIAA) a 32-16 lead at the 4:45 mark. Southern was 9-of-13 from the field in the run, while SBU (12-3, 4-2 MIAA) missed 10 straight shots and committed four turnovers.
The lead ended up at 12 for the Lions by the halftime break, 36-24, but bounced back up to 15 early in the second stanza, 41-26.
The Lady Bearcats got back into the game with a 12-0 spurt -- seven coming courtesy of senior C Kelly Reinkemeyer -- and made it 41-38 with 14:58 left.
With MSSU up by eight with 7:47 left, SBU completed the comeback with nine unanswered points to take its first lead since near the midway point of the first half -- it was 55-54 with 2:12 left. Reinkemeyer scored the first four points of the run.
That would be the last scoring for the Lady Bearcats -- senior G/F Ela Zawadka made two free throws with 1:17 left to regain the lead for MSSU, and senior C Fatai Hala'Api'Api hit a jumper in the lane with 35 seconds remaining.
SBU had four shots to tie the game -- all missed the mark.
Hala'Api'Api led the Lions with 16 points and 12 rebounds in a reserve role. Junior G Lindsey Davis added 15 points and senior F Tynesha Pierce scored 13.
Reinkemeyer led SBU with 17 points, while junior G Cortney Shewmaker added 15 points and junior F/G Courney Creed had 11 points. The Lady Bearcats made just 6-of-27 from three-point range in the game.

The longest winning streak was 44 games from Dec. 1, 1990 to March 20, 1993.
The Lady Blues have won 35 straight regular season non-conference games in Lee Arena. The last defeat by a non-conference team in the regular season was to Missouri-St. Louis in a 59-51 setback on Dec. 30, 2000.

WU in the national poll . . .
The Washburn Lady Blues fell four spots from No. 4 to No. 8 in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll which was released Jan. 15. Washburn was ranked No. 6 in the preseason poll which was released on Oct. 31. The Lady Blues were ranked No. 8 in the final poll of the 2007-08 season after finishing with a 29-4 overall record. The poll marks the 95th consecutive week the Lady Blues have been ranked.

Lady Blues Tip Ins . . .
• There will be two Sao  Paulo, Brazil natives on the court when Washburn and Southwest Baptist play. Both Regiane Araujo and SBU's Erika Souza list their hometowns from there. Araujo prepped at Colegio Objectivo and played junior college at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Souza played junior college at Crowder College and played prep ball at Colegio Planeta.
Corkey Stiger moved into eighth all-time at Washburn in 3-pointers with 89. She needs four  more to move into seventh place all-time.
• Stiger's 267 3-point attempts is seventh all-time.
Amanda Holmes is 14th all-time with 209 free throws made and 13th in free throw attempts with 314.
• Holmes is 13th all-time in rebounds at Washburn with 511.
• Holmes' 92 career blocked shots is fourth all-time at Washburn needing 10 to move into sole possession of third place.
