PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Ichabods opened on an 8-0 run and led by double figures early in the game but couldn't hold on as they fell 82-69 at Pittsburg State Saturday. Washburn fell to 11-6 overall and 3-5 in the MIAA while the Gorillas improved to 13-4 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
The Ichabods will return home Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game against Missouri Southern which will complete the first half of the MIAA season.
Darnell Kimble led the Ichabods with a season-high 16 points off the bench and
Andrew Meile was 5 of 10 from the field with three 3-pointers for 13 points. Kimble was just 3 of 10 from the field but 10 of 15 from the free throw line.
The Ichabods opened the game on an 8-0 run and then led 16-5 after a 3-pointer from Meile at the 15:34 mark. The Gorillas quickly erased that 11-point lead with a 14-0 run to take a 3-point lead, 19-16 at 11:29.
A quick 4-0 run put Washburn up briefly but the Gorillas out-scored WU 24-12 the rest of the opening half to lead 43-32 at halftime.
A 3-pointer from Aaron Jackson gave PSU a 17-point lead, its largest of the night at 13:28 and then the Gorillas held a double-digit lead until Meile hit a 3 with 3:38 remaining. A minute later
Mario Scott hit a free throw to cut the Gorilla lead to nine again but he missed the second free throw and the Gorillas held on from there.
Both teams combined to shoot 66 free throws, including 20 in the final three minutes of the game. PSU was 11 of 12 during that stretch while Washburn was 6 of 8. The Ichabods ended the game 21 of 33 from the line (64 percent) while Pittsburg State was 29 of 33 (88 percent).
Both teams were cold from the field with the Gorillas hitting 39 percent of their shots and Washburn making 38 percent. Pittsburg State won the rebound battle 40-39.
Kimble also led Washburn with nine rebounds while Scott led with six assists and three steals. He finished with nine points and a season-high eight rebounds.
The Gorillas had four players reach double figures with Keith Windon leading with 18.
The Ichabods lost their third straight road game and fell to 2-6 on the road.
