Washburn comeback falls short at Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. - Washburn chipped away at a 14-point halftime deficit and led by a point with 2:47 remaining but couldn't hold on as Emporia State won 92-87 Wednesday night in Emporia.

The Ichabods (9-3, 1-2 MIAA) will head to Northwest Missouri Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. game. Emporia State improved to 6-6 and 1-2 in the league.

Angel Santiago led WU with 18 points and Paul Byers added 16 and eight rebounds. Kyle Snyder reached double figures for the second straight night and fourth time this year with 10 rebounds.

The Ichabods shot just 34 percent in the opening half while ESU was 59 percent from the field. Santiago and Grant Hargett each had eight points with a pair of 3-pointers each and Washburn made six 3-pointers off 17 tries. ESU bettered that with a 7-of-15 performance behind the 3-point line.

Emporia State led the entire first half after starting with an 11-0 run. The Hornets took their biggest lead, 16 points at 1:30 and went into the locker room with a 14-point lead at 53-39.

Washburn quickly cut the ESU lead to single figures at 58-49, 2:43 into the half and then the Ichabods tied the score at 62-62 at the 14:26 mark.

The Ichabods built a three-point lead, their largest of the game at 12:29 on a 3-pointer from Santiago. After five ties the Hornets went up by two, 83-81 at 3:05 and then Andrew Meile answered with a 3 to give WU the lead. DeAndre Townsend hit a lay-up with 1:22 left to give the Hornets the lead for good.

Washburn shot 46 percent in the second half to finish with a 40 percent effort while Emporia State was 56 percent. The Ichabods tied a school record with 15 made 3-pointers off a season-high 36 attempts.


Notes:
• In the 187th meeting between the two schools, ESU took a 94-93 lead in the all-time series. ESU has won five straight times in the series.
• Washburn tied a school-record with 15 3-pointers and shot a season-high 36 attempts. The Ichabods also made 15 3s on February 8, 1997 against Central Missouri. The 36 attempts is one less than the school record of 37 set on March 14, 1992 against Central Oklahoma.
• Emporia State's 92 points tied the total allowed to Kansas in the season opener, tying the highest allowed this year by Washburn.
• Angel Santiago reached double figures for the eighth straight time with 18 points and he made a season-high five 3-pointers.
Paul Byers tied his season high with 16 points. He also made a career-high four 3-pointers off five attempts. His previous high was two, accomplished eight times. Byers was 5 of 6 in the second half, scoring 13 points after getting just three in the first half.
• Washburn out-rebounded ESU 39-36, suffering its first loss when having more rebounds. The Ichabods are now 8-1 when getting more rebounds.
