TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues held off a second half by No. 20 Nebraska-Omaha surge in a 4-3 win in Yager Stadium. The win was the Lady Blues' fourth straight win this season. Washburn will be back in action on Oct. 16 at Emporia State.
The Lady Blues scored three goals in the first half as
Danielle Ayala scored her fourth goal of the season at the 14:40 mark of the match on an assist from
Lauren Henry as she beat the goalie on a ball into the right side of the net.
Washburn took a 2-0 lead on
Lauren Henry's fifth goal of the season on an assist from
Jessica Mainz at the 33:24 mark of the match. Ayala added her second goal of the evening on Mainz's second assist of the night in the 38th minute of the match. UNO's Melanie Patrick scored right before the first half horn as she scored on a corner kick from Brittany Battaglia. It was her first goal of the season.
To start the second half, Mainz scored her sixth goal of the season as she raced down the right side of the field and slid the ball into the upper left hand corner of the goal to put Washburn up 4-1. It would turn out the be the game-winner for the Lady Blues as the Mavericks' Casey Bigsby scored the first of her two goals against Washburn. The first cam unassisted from 10-yards out and the second was off another corner kick from Battaglia.
Ashley Klone picked up the win in goal for Washburn as she picked up four saves.
Washburn was outshot in the match 13 to 11, including a 6 to 3 advantage in the second half. Each team had three corner kicks.
