HAYS, Kan. - The Lady Blues gave up big runs in the first two sets at Fort Hays State but they fought them off and then won easily in the third set for a 25-22, 25-19, 25-15 win against the Tigers Wednesday night. Washburn (22-2, 7-2 MIAA) will return home to host No. 10 Emporia State Friday at 7 p.m. in Lee Arena.
Washburn gave runs of 9-2 in the first set and 6-0 in the second set that both tied the set but the Lady Blues didn't allow the Tigers to score consecutive points in the third set.
Ashley Shepard led WU with 14 kills and hit .294 and
Kate Hampson had 27 assists as Washburn hit .205 as a team.
Monica Miesner led the defense with 17 digs and
Molly Smith added 15.
Mollie Lacy contributed to five of Washburn's 10 blocks.
Washburn led 18-12 in the first set before FHSU went on a 9-2 run that tied the score at 20-20. After a WU timeout the Lady Blues ended the set on 5-2 run with Shepard getting two kills, including the set-winner.
The Tigers tied the second set at 9-9 with a 6-0 run but the Lady Blues answered with a 5-0 run and never looked back. In the third set the two teams were tied at 1-1 and 2-2 but Washburn answered every FHSU point with a side-out to lead to a win.
FHSU hit just .068 but Breanna Roberts hit .462 with eight kills.
The Lady Blues have now won all five matches against the Tigers since they joined the MIAA in 2006.
