Lady Blues travel to ESU for Turnpike Tussle soccer style

Setting the Scene:

The Washburn Lady Blues are looking for their first five-match winning streak since the 2006 season when they travel to Emporia, Kan., on Oct. 16 for the soccer version of the Turnpike Tussle. The Lady Blues have won the last six meetings in the series. On Oct. 18, the Lady Blues will take on Northwest Missouri in Maryville for the second time in less than a week. Washburn won the first meeting of the season with the Bearcats 3-0 on Oct. 9 in Yager Stadium.

Last time out for the Lady Blues:
Oct. 11, 2008 • Washburn 4, Nebraska-Omaha 3 -- TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues held off a second half by No. 20 Nebraska-Omaha surge in a 4-3 win in Yager Stadium. The win was the Lady Blues' fourth straight win this season.
The Lady Blues scored three goals in the first half as Danielle Ayala scored her fourth goal of the season at the 14:40 mark of the match on an assist from Lauren Henry as she beat the goalie on a ball into the right side of the net.
Washburn took a 2-0 lead on Lauren Henry's fifth goal of the season on an assist from Jessica Mainz at the 33:24 mark of the match. Ayala added her second goal of the evening on Mainz's second assist of the night in the 38th minute of the match. UNO's Melanie Patrick scored right before the first half horn as she scored on a corner kick from Brittany Battaglia. It was her first goal of the season.
To start the second half, Mainz scored her sixth goal of the season as she raced down the right side of the field and slid the ball into the upper left hand corner of the goal to put Washburn up 4-1. It would turn out the be the game-winner for the Lady Blues as the Mavericks' Casey Bigsby scored the first of her two goals against Washburn. The first cam unassisted from 10-yards out and the second was off another corner kick from Battaglia.
Ashley Klone picked up the win in goal for Washburn as she picked up four saves.
Washburn was outshot in the match 13 to 11, including a 6 to 3 advantage in the second half. Each team had three corner kicks.   

About Emporia State:
Quick Kicks: The Hornets enter the week with a 3-8-1 overall record and they are 1-6-1 in MIAA play. ESU has been outshot this season 248 to 114.
About the coach: Jim Schneiderhahn is 6-42-2 in his third year at ESU and 45-85-8 in his eighth year as a head coach. He came to ESU after serving as an assistant coach at Tulane University. He was the head coach at Benedictine from 2000-04. 
Series history: Washburn leads the all-time series 6-3-1 and have won the last six meetings. Washburn has outscored the Hornets 11-0 in the last three matches.

Last meeting with ESU:  Oct. 4, 2007 -- TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues won their sixth straight match over Emporia State with a 2-0 win in Yager Stadium. Jessica Mainz tied her own school record for the third time while recording her 12th and 13th goals of the season. She also set a school record for the most points in a season with her 31st of the year.
Mainz scored her first goal of the evening on a midfield pass from Angela Wiseman to Danielle Ayala on a sliding kick from six yards out in the 27th minute to put Washburn up 1-0. That score would hold up through halftime as Washburn outshot the Hornets 11-0 in the first half.
In the second half, Mainz tied her school record for goals in a season with her 13th in the 60th minute off a crossing pass from Ayala putting Washburn up 2-0. The goal pushed Mainz up to 31 points (13 goals, 5 assists) to set a new high-water mark for points in a season.
Ashley Klone picked up the win in goal for the Lady Blues without making a save as Washburn outshot the Hornets 27 to 1. It was her fourth shutout of the season. In their first meeting on Sept. 8 in Emporia, Washburn outshot the Hornets 48 to 2.
Last time out for ESU: October 11, 2008 -- The ESU soccer team played to a tie for the first time since 2006 taking Northwest Missouri to the wire and earning a point in the standings. Jennifer Stillmock tied a career high with 12 saves as the Hornets pulled out the tie even though they were outshot 34-7 in the game. The Hornets held a lead in the game for just over 33 minutes.
The Hornet goal came late in the first period as Alison German beat Bearcat goalkeeper Kira Lazenby to arch a shot into the goal. The play was set up as Raquel White beat the keeper to a deflection and got a pass off to the wide open Germany. Northwest's only goal came unassisted in the 73rd minute.

About Northwest Missouri:

Quick Kicks: The Bearcats enter the week with a 7-4-2 record and a 3-4-2 mark in the MIAA. NWMSU won their first six of seven matches played this season before going 1-2-1 in their last four.
About the coach: Tracy Hoza is in her sixth season at Washburn and she has compiled a 34-55-13 overall record.
Last meeting with Northwest Missouri  - Oct. 9 - TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues won their third straight match in a row picking up a 3-0 win over Northwest Missouri. With the win, Washburn improves to 7-5-1 overall and 3-4-0 in MIAA play. After a scoreless first half, the Lady Blues' Ashley Taylor scored her third goal of the season on an assist from Danielle Ayala 49 seconds into second half action. At the 63:36 mark of the second half, Lauren Henry scored her fourth goal of the season on Ayala's second assist of the night. Washburn's Nicole Tomes scored her first collegiate goal of her career on a an assist from Brianne Silovsky to put Washburn up 3-0 at the 81:25 mark of the match.
Jenny Persons picked up her third shutout of the season collecting five saves while facing eight shots. She also improved to 5-0-0 in goal for the Lady Blues this season.
Washburn held an 18 to 8 advantage in shots in the match including a 12 to 5 lead in the second half. Washburn also had four corner kicks compared to two for the Bearcats.
Last time out for the Bearcats: (Oct. 11) EMPORIA, Kan.—Northwest Missouri State freshman Kelly Obley scored her first collegiate goal in the second half to help the Bearcats gain a 1-1 tie against Emporia State Saturday.
Obley scored an unassisted goal in the 74th minute after the Hornets (3-8-1, 1-6-1 MIAA) had taken a 1-0 lead late in the first half on a shot by Alison Germany. Obley's kick soared to the right of Hornet goalkeeper Jennifer Stillmock and into the back of the net.
Stillmock had 12 saves in the contest, five more than the number of shots attempted by her teammates. The Bearcats outshot the Hornets 34-7.
Northwest (7-4-2, 3-4-2) took seven of the eight shots taken in the two overtime periods, but couldn't post the gamewinner. Andrea Tritz had seven shots, two on goal. Three of Obley's four shots were on goal.

Lady Blues Soccer History:

Washburn is 53-41-20 (.545) all-time in its fifth season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 33-29-15 (.481). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 23-15-8 and they are 20-21-9 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-4-3.

Blue Notes:

Start Chart: The Lady Blues' Kaydi Hooker, Jessica Mainz and Lisa Fahey have all made starts in 77 career games setting a new Washburn record breaking the previous record of 66 held by Jenna Lawless. The Washburn record for career games played is 77 held by Amanda Geist. The MIAA record for career games played and starts is 85 held by Truman's Sara Murray. If all three play in each remaining regular season match played this season, they will tie the MIAA record.

The Mainz Points: Jessica Mainz has 111 career points with 47 goals and 17 assists. Her 111 points is the third-most in MIAA history. Her 47 career goals are the third-most in MIAA history trailing Ashley Munnelly with 53 and Sara Murray with 59 on the career chart. Her 17 career assists is tied for eighth all-time in the MIAA. Additionally, against Emporia State, Mainz has the match winning goal in all six of Washburn's series wins over ESU. Of her 47 career goals scored, Mainz has scored 10 against the Hornets. She also scored a career-high 16 points against the ESU on the basketball court last season.

A People Persons: Senior goalie Jenny Persons currently has the school record for goals against average with 0.88. She is ranked in the top 10 in eight career categories and her eight wins rank third all-time at Washburn in goal.

Oh Henry: Lauren Henry has five goals and three assists for 13 points in her first season at Washburn. Her five goals are tied for fourth on the freshman single-season goal chart and her three assists are tied for third. The 13 total points is tied for fourth by a freshman at Washburn.

Going to the Chapel:
On Saturday, fourth-year student assistant coach Grady Woodruff is getting married in Topeka, so needless to say he will not suited up on the bench against the Bearcats, but suited up in a tuxedo for his nuptuals to Washburn student Elizabeth Volk.

Up Next:
Following the away match with Northwest Missouri will return home for an Oct. 25 match against Southwest Baptist in Yager Stadium. The Lady Blues will then travel to take on Truman on Oct. 30 before returning home for senior day on Nov. 1. The Lady Blues will wrap up the regular season with away matches at Missouri Southern on Nov. 6 and at Missouri Western on Nov. 9.
