Monica Miesner had 11 kills and hit .667 as the ninth-ranked Lady Blues swept No. 10 Emporia State, 25-15, 25-15, 25-12, Friday night in front of 1,095 fans at Lee Arena. The win wrapped up a week in which Washburn's football, soccer and volleyball teams defeated their rival Hornets in the Turnpike Tussle.
Washburn (23-2, 8-2 MIAA) knocked off the Hornets (22-2), previously undefeated in the MIAA (8-1), and play next at Northwest Missouri State Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Stephanie Nitz had 10 kills and hit .412 and she led the Lady Blues with seven blocks. Washburn had 10 as a team with
Ashley Shepard getting three of them.
Shepard and
Caitlin Conley each had eight kills and Washburn hit .280 while ESU hit just .071 as a team.
Kate Hampson had 38 assists and tied
Molly Smith for the team lead with nine digs each.

Ashley Shepard's twin sister, led ESU with 12 kills and a .320 attack percentage.
The Lady Blues trailed just once in the match as ESU scored the first point in the third set. After a 2-2 tie the Lady Blues took over and led by seven at 12-5 after a 7-1 run. They led comfortably until the Hornets pulled within one at 22-21. The Lady Blues scored the clinching points on a kill from Nitz and then two straight ESU attack errors.
Washburn improved to 3-2 against ranked teams this year and head coach
Chris Herron improved to 10-13 against top 10 teams.

• Emporia State is the No. 1 team in the NCAA South Central Region ranking released Wednesday. Washburn is No. 5 in the region.
