Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues will look to keep their two-game winning streak going as they play host to Northwest Missouri on Oct. 9 and Nebraska-Omaha on Oct. 11 in Yager Stadium. The match with UNO will follow the Ichabods' football game with Emporia State on homecoming beginning with a 6 p.m. kick. The match with the Bearcats will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Oct. 4, 2008 • Washburn 1, Missouri Southern 0 -- TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team blanked Missouri Southern 1-0 to improve to 6-5-1 on the season and 2-4-0 in MIAA play.
Danielle Ayala scored her third goal of the season and the only one of the game from 4-yards out as she received a pass from
Lauren Henry putting it in the net and Washburn up 1-0 in the 34th minute of the match. It turned out to be the match-winner as well, the third of her Washburn career.
Jenny Persons picked up the shutout in goal for the Lady Blues, the fourth of her Washburn career as she picked up two saves - both in the first half.
Washburn outshot the Lions 17 to 4 including 10 to 2 in the first half.
About Northwest Missouri:
Quick Kicks: The Bearcats enter the week with a 7-3-1 record and a 3-3-1 mark in the MIAA. NWMSU won their first six of seven matches played this season before going 1-2-1 in their last four.

Last meeting with Northwest Missouri - Oc. 12, 2007 - TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Lady Blues played a double overtime 1-1 tie with Northwest Missouri on Friday night in Yager Stadium. After playing a scoreless first half where Washburn outshot the Bearcats 8-2, the Lady Blues jumped on the board first in the second half as
Danielle Ayala scored her fifth goal of the season on an assist from
Traci Nigg from 6-yards out in front of the box in the 50th minute of play.
The Bearcats responded in the 58th minute as Marti Trummer scored her third goal of the season from 15 yards out into the lower left corner of the goal on an assist from Holly Ramaeker knotting the score at 1-1. Neither team could put any offensive advances together in the two overtime periods as both squads had one combined shot, a head by Northwest Missouri in the second overtime.
Washburn held a 12 to 5 advantage in shots and an 8 to 3 margin in corner kicks.
Last time out for the Bearcats: (Oct. 4) MARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest scored in the 69th minute after Kelsey Sanders drove down the sideline for an unassisted goal and the Northwest defense held to preserve the 2-1 upset of No. 4 Nebraska-Omaha today at Bearcat Pitch. It's the first win against a top five opponent and against the Mavericks in program history. Northwest scored first off a goal from Rikki Southard, who used the only corner kick of the half from Andrea Tritz and a pass from Amanda Deml for her first goal of the season. The Mavericks evened the score off a penalty kick from Megan Jensen in the 33th minute in the final score before halftime.Sanders recorded her second goal of the season for the only goal of the second half. The Mavericks had six corner kick opportunities in the final 45 minutes, but the Bearcat defense held Nebraska-Omaha at bay as Kira Lazenby made three saves in the half. Tritz led Northwest with three shots, moving into a tied in season records. Deml'dss assist moves her into a tie for second in career records with her seventh.

About the coach: Head coach Don Klosterman, has compiled a 163-35-7 overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to at least the quarterfinals in six straight seasons, including the 2005 National Championship. Klosterman has also been named the National Coach of the Year two times (2002, 2005).
Series history: UNO leads the all-time series 2-0-1. The teams tied in their last meeting 2-2 in the 2006 NCAA second round playoffs, but the Mavericks advanced 3-1 on PK's to advance in the national playoffs.

Last meeting with UNO: Nov. 5, 2006- OMAHA, Neb. -- UNO's Beth McGill's second goal of the game, with 58 seconds to play, forced an overtime and the Mavericks then survived a shootout with No. 10 Washburn to advance to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals against Grand Valley State Nov. 11. Officially, the game will go down as a 2-2 tie after the teams played through two 10-minute overtimes. UNO converted three of four penalty kicks in the overtime to just one for Washburn. Washburn, who ends their season at 15-1-6, took the lead at 22:56 on a goal in the box by
Jessica Mainz on a pass from
Ashley Taylor. The goal was Mainz's 13th of the season, which tied her own single-season record. McGill, UNO's career-leading scorer and the MVP in the North Central Conference the past two seasons, slipped the ball past goalkeeper Jenna Hatlestad at 30:39 to tie the match. Washburn reclaimed the advantage when Jolene Silovsky was able to dribble around UNO goalkeeper Ellen Petersen, who had come out to play the ball. Mainz earned the assist on the goal, which came at 69:31. UNO conintued to apply heavy pressure in the closing minutes. The winning play started on the right side where Branie Beale gained control and fed the ball into the box. Ali Portell's shot banged off the post and McGill kicked in the rebound. The Mavericks nearly won the game in the final minute of the second overtime period when Lindsey Nealon, who entered the game because of an injury just seconds before, had a shot bounce off a defender in the box.
In the shootout, Petersen made a save on Mainz and McGill scored in the first round. Meagan Horvath then scored past Petersen, but Beale matched her with a goal.
Lisa Fahey's shot went over the crossbar, but Portell was stopped by Hatlestad. Petersen made her second save, stopping Jenna Lawless on a diving stop near the right post and UNO sophomore Tara Wegehaupt scored, giving UNO a 3-1 edge.

Washburn is 51-41-20 (.545) all-time in its fifth season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 31-29-15 (.481). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 23-15-8 and they are 20-21-9 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-4-3.

Following the home matches with Northwest Missouri and Nebraska-Omaha, the Lady Blues will have three straight matches on the road beginning with Emporia State on Oct. 16, Northwest Missouri on Oct. 18 and Nebraska-Omaha on Oct. 23 before returning home for an Oct. 25 match against Southwest Baptist in Yager Stadium. The Lady Blues will then travel to take on Truman on Oct. 30 before returning home for senior day on Nov. 1.
