DeAndre Eggins had a career-high 25 points and he made 15 of 18 free throws, all in the second half, as the Ichabods beat sixth-ranked BYU-Hawaii in McKinley High School Gymnasium in the first game of the Hoop N Surf Classic Wednesday night.
The Ichabods (7-2) will go for an island sweep as they take on Chaminade Thursday at 4 p.m. Hawaii Time (8 p.m. Central Time) at the Blaisdell Center.
Lekheythan Malone grabbed an offensive rebound with 8:30 left in the game and slammed it in to tie the score at 53-53 after BYUH led by as much as nine in the second half. That dunk was part of a 12-1 run for Washburn but the Seasiders were able to slow WU's charge as the two teams tied the score three more times after that, the last at 60-60. A lay-up from Eggins at 4:04 gave WU a 62-60 lead and the Ichabods led from then on. Washburn made 8 of 11 free throws in the final five minutes with Eggins sinking 7 of 9. He made his last five to help put the game out of reach.
Nate Daniels hit a 3-pointer with 1:56 remaining to give WU a seven-point lead and the Seasiders could only cut the lead to three once before Eggins put the game away with his free throws.
Eggins was 5 of 12 from the field with five rebounds and three assists. His 25 points was a new season high after scroring 22 Saturday at Truman. Malone had 22 points off 9 of 16 shooting and
Darnell Kimble scored nine points and led with nine rebounds.
The Ichabods jumped to a 6-0 lead to start the game and they led by as much as eight before BYUH (3-1) tied the game at 27-27 with 4:05 left in the half. The Seasiders used an 8-0 run to tie the score and they continued that momentum to go into the locker room up 36-31 at halftime.
Eggins and Malone led with three assists each, Malone and William McNeill led with three steals and
Paul Byers blocked two shots.
Lucas Alves and Virgil Buensuceso led BYU-Hawaii with 16 points each.
Notes
- Washburn won its first game against BYUH and is now 1-2 against the Seasiders overall. The two hadn't played since the 1988-89 season prior to this game.
- The Ichabods are now 2-1 against ranked teams this year.
