Ichabods hold off Truman for MIAA road win

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Brady Sisk led three Ichabods in double figures as Washburn held on for a 61-54 win at Truman Saturday afternoon. The Ichabods improved to 15-8 and evened their MIAA record at 7-7 while Truman dropped to 4-19 and 3-11 in the conference.

The Ichabods will begin a three-game home stand Wednesday when they host Northwest Missouri at 7:30 p.m. in Lee Arena.

The Ichabods were led in scoring by bench players Sisk with 13 and Mario Scott with 12. Starter Darnell Kimble had 11 and Kyle Snyder led the Ichabods with 10 rebounds.

Both teams struggled from the floor throughout the game. Washburn was 40 percent in the first half while Truman was 31 percent. The Ichabods were 35 percent in the second half and ended the game shooting 38 percent while TSU finished at 34 percent after a 36 percent effort in the second half.

Washburn led the rebound battle 43-36 and had seven steals while Truman committed 11 turnovers.

After early lead changes, Truman had a 16-11 lead before Washburn went on a 9-0 run to take its first lead. A steal from Grant Hargett and then a layup on the other end gave the Ichabods their first and only lead of the night as they held it throughout.

They led by 10 at halftime, 32-22, and had an 18-point lead with 7:40 left. The Bulldogs cut the lead to seven with 2:02 remaining and then again with a meaningless 3-pointer with five seconds remaining.

Hargett led the offense with five assists while James Williams and Paul Byers each had a pair of steals.Byers added nine points.

The win guaranteed Washburn its first winning season since 2004-05.


Notes
• In the 49th meeting between the two schools Washburn took a 33-16 lead in the series record.
• For the second straight game Andrew Meile and Grant Hargett started at guard and Paul Byers, Kyle Snyder and Brady Sisk started at forward. This combination is 2-0. Meile and Byers have started all 23 games and Meile has started 63 straight games. His last non-start was December 30, 2005 at Truman. Kimble made his 11th start, Hargett started for the ninth time and Snyder made his seventh start.
• Washburn improved to 13-0 when leading at the half, 12-1 when leading with five minutes remaining and 8-1 on Saturdays. It was just the third away win as Washburn is 3-7 on the road.
• The Ichabods set season lows in the 3-point category with one make, 12 attempts and a .083 percentage.
Grant Hargett set a season high with five assists.
Kyle Snyder reached double figures in rebounds for the third straight game with 10.
Brady Sisk led the team with 13 points and Washburn improved to 10-2 when he reaches double figures and 5-0 when he leads the team in scoring.
