Ichabods fall by five in regular season finale

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Ichabods tied the score four times in the final five minutes but could never get ahead in a 64-59 loss at Central Missouri Saturday afternoon. Washburn fell to 17-10 overall and 9-9 in the MIAA while UCM finished its regular season at 18-9 and 11-7 in the league.

The Ichabods will be the No. 6 seed and play Central Missouri at 8:15 p.m. Friday in the MIAA tournament in Kansas City, Mo., and Municipal Auditorium. The Mules finished in a tie for third.

Darnell Kimble led WU with 16 points and Paul Byers had 11. Grant Hargett scored 10 with a pair of 3-pointers while Kyle Snyder reached double figures in rebounding for the sixth time in seven games with a season-high 16.

The Ichabods were down by four at halftime but opened the second half on a 10-4 run to go up by two, 36-34 at 16:30. The lead changed six times after that leading into the five minute mark. A three-point play by Kimble at 4:56 tied the score at 52-52. Hargett's jumper at 1:31 tied the score again, 58-58, but the Mules hit six free throws the remainder of the game to hold on for the win.

Washburn shot 39 percent from the field, 26 percent from 3-point range and 60 percent from the free throw line. The Mules weren't much better from the field or long distance, but went 20 of 24 from the free throw line while WU went just 6 of 10.

Kevin Wolbrinck scored 14 points to lead the Mules.
