Stroth has strong outing as Ichabods win game one before Rockhurst comes back to split

The  Ichabods won a quick 1-0 game against Rockhurst in the opener and then lost 12-7 in the second game to split a doubleheader with the Hawks Tuesday at Falley Field.

Washburn will return to MIAA action with a four-game series at Missouri Western starting Friday at 5 p.m.


Game 1

Bryan Stroth threw a complete game shutout and Tyler Blankenship drove in the winning run in a 1-0 win against Rockhurst in the opener.

Stroth threw 79 pitches in a game that lasted one hour and 20 minutes. He allowed six hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

The Ichabods scored the game's only run in the second inning when Luis Beltran Lopez singled to lead off the second inning and then later scored on a hit from Tyler Blankenship. Blankenship had two of Washburn's four hits. Lopez and Wes Joy had the other two.

The Hawks hit three doubles in the game and had runners at third base three times. In the top of the seventh Tyler Rzepka led off with a double and then his pinch runner made it to third on a ground out. Stroth struck out the next batter with three pitches to end the game.

The Ichabods overcame a 4-0 deficit but then gave up the lead late as Rockhurst won the second game 12-7.

The Hawks led 5-1 until the bottom of the third inning when Washburn plated six runs off six hits. Lopez, Blankenship and Dane Simoneau all had RBI doubles in the inning and Joy singled in a run in his second at-bat of the inning.

The rally put Washburn ahead 7-5 until Rockhurst scored twice off reliever Drue Henton in the fifth inning to tie the game and then got five runs in the sixth to close the scoring. J.P. Verhulst gave up the first four runs in the inning to suffer the loss.

Lopez was 2 for 4 in the game with two RBI and two runs scored. Simoneau also connected for two hits.

Each starter struggled to make it late into the game. RU's Ben Baker gave up six of Washburn's seven runs in 2 2/3 innings and Jake Iverson allowed four runs and seven hits in two innings of work.

The Ichabods were out-hit 13-9 and committed four errors. Their first run came in the second inning on an RBI single from Nick Barnes.
