TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Lady Blues gained a split in an MIAA doubleheader with Central Missouri falling in the first game 4-1 while taking the nightcap 5-0. With the split, Washburn's record moves to 22-20 (4-4 MIAA) while Central Missouri goes to 24-14, 6-2 MIAA. Washburn will be in action on Wednesday against Emporia State beginning at 3 p.m. in the softball version of the Turnpike Tussle.
Game 1 – Central Missouri 4, Washburn 1 – Box Score
The Lady Blues broke a 0-0 tie after scoring one in the bottom of the third inning off a sacrifice fly by
Mandy Tarbutton scoring
Malarie Fellers who led off the inning with single.
The Jennies knotted the score in the fifth inning and added three more in the seventh inning for the 4-1 win.
UCM's Megan Leonard improved to 13-4 with five strikeouts and
Kelly Swygert struck out four while falling to 13-8 overall.
Game 2 – Washburn 5, Central Missouri 0 - Box Score
The Lady Blues took advantage of three Central Missouri errors to gain a split in the doubleheader taking the second game 5-0.
Kayla Long picked up the complete-game shutout allowing two hits in the game.
The Lady Blues scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the first as
Dani White drove in
Mandy Tarbutton who singled in the inning.
Washburn added two more in the fourth inning scoring both runs with two outs taking advantage of a Jennie error. After
Dani White doubled to left field, she was replaced by
Maggie West as a pinch runner, who later scored on an
Ashley Shaffer single. Shaffer hit a slow-roller to first base, but was able to win the dash to the base sliding in feet first allowing West to score from third and
Whitney Tapp scored all the way from second base on the play putting Washburn up 3-0.
Washburn added two more in the sixth inning when Shaffer drove in her second run of the day scoring
Malarie Fellers. Shaffer also scored two runs for the Lady Blues.
Dani White had two hits for the Lady Blues.
