HOUSTON, Texas -- The No. 26 ranked Washburn Ichabod tennis season came to an end with a 5-1 loss to No. 5 Barry in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA National Tournament. The Ichabods wrap up the season with a 14-7 overall record while Barry improves to 20-4.
The Ichabods started out the match taking the one of the three doubles matches with the two losses coming in tie breaks. The No. 1 duo of
Rutger Vliegenberg, ranked 26th in the country topped the No. 5 ranked team of Patrick Rittenauer and Ales Svigelj 9-7. At No. 2 doubles,
Brad Johnston and
Nathan Martin fell to Emmaunel Fraitzl and Jakub Fejfar 9-8 and the Ichabods' No. 3 team of
Ryan Ward and
Drew Hanson also fell 9-8 to Andrew Sharnov and Roman Werschel 9-8.
In singles action, Ward dropped his No. 2 singles match to No. 18 ranked Svigelj 6-2, 6-0. At No. 6 singles, Nate Hurd fell 6-3, 6-0 to Fejfar. Barry wrapped up the match at No. 3 singles when Fraitzl topped Martin 6-3, 6-3.
In matches which were not completed, Viegenberg was leading Rittenauer, the No. 15 player in the country 6-5. At No. 4 singles, Hanson was leading in the second set 3-2 over Sharnov after dropping the first set 6-4. Washburn's Plum was tied in the second set 2-2 after falling in the opening set 6-3.
It was also the final match for head coach Jennifer Hastert, a three-time All-American at Washburn, as she is expecting her second child this summer. Former Metro State head coach Dave Alden will begin his coaching duties on July 1 after leading his men's team to the NCAA regional finals.
