Lady Blues to host #10 Truman, Missouri Western in MIAA soccer action

Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues return to Yager Stadium for two games in the next three days as they take on No. 10 ranked Truman on Thursday and Missouri Western on Saturday. The Lady Blues are 3-2-1 and 0-1-0 in the MIAA. Truman enters the match with a 5-0-0 overall record with a 1-0-0 mark in conference play. Missouri Western is 1-4-1 overall and 0-2-0 in MIAA action.

Last time out for the Lady Blues:
Sept. 13, 2008 • Central Missouri 1, Washburn 0 -- Washburn out-shot Central Missouri 9-5 in the second half but could never equalize a first-half goal from the Jennies as they defeated the Lady Blues 1-0 Saturday at Yager Stadium in WU's home and MIAA opener.
UCM goalkeeper Lauren Bamvakais stopped five Washburn shots on goal, including a penalty kick from Jessica Mainz in the 29th minute of the first half that would have tied the game.
At 14:58 UCM's Melanie Hall scored unassisted as she dribbled the ball up the middle and fired it in from 20 yards out.
The penalty kick was the Lady Blues' only shot on goal in the first half. They put four on in the second half but never found the back of the net.
UCM won the overall shot battle 13-12 and Washburn held a 7-5 advantage on corner kicks.
Danielle Sicard and Angela Wiseman each had two shots and one on goal. Hall led UCM with four shots. 
About Truman:
Quick Kicks: With yet another win last weekend, the Bulldogs climbed up the NSCAA Division II poll and improved to 5-0 on the season. Truman is facing a stretch of five road games before they return to Kirksville for more home action.
In the MIAA opener, they knocked off Northwest Missouri State on the strength of goals from Jessica Wiegert and Megan Buri. Wiegert and Riley Mahn are tied for the team lead in goals, with three each, and are first and second in assists, with three and two respectively.
On the defensive end, keeper Denise Childress continues to post strong numbers, with 20 saves and three shutouts in the team's five wins. The Bulldogs blanked their first three opponents and they've only given up two goals so far this season, outshooting teams by a margin of 74 to 42.
About the coach: Mike Cannon picked up his 200th win in the team's first match of the year against Quincy. He is the winningest coach in Truman women's soccer history at 204-72-25 and is ranked seventh in victories among active Division II coaches. Cannon's teams have won eight of the nine MIAA titles the conference has offered and have been to the NCAA post-season six times. His 2007 squad captured the MIAA conference tournament title in the only year of its existence after sharing the regular season championship. He has been named MIAA Coach of the Year seven times - most recently in 2007 - and was the Central Region Coach of the Year in 2001.s 1-0-1 after the teams tied in a 3-3 match on Aug. 25 last season. UCO won the first meeting in a soggy, 70-minute contest in Edmond taking a 3-0 win.
Last meeting with Truman  - Nov. 3, 2007 - WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues after suffering a 1-0 loss will have to wait until the final NCAA Central Regional rankings are released to see if their season continues after the defeat to Truman. The Lady Blues entered this week's poll ranked No. 8, and the top six teams in the region move on to the NCAA Postseason Tournament.
Truman's Theresa Bauler scored the only goal of the match at the 16:27 mark unassisted to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead. Emily Roark picked up the shutout in goal for Truman without picking up a save.
Truman outshot the Lady Blues 7-4 in the match.
Jenny Persons took the loss in goal for the Lady Blues allowing the solo goal picking up three saves.
Washburn will most likely finish the season 10-6-5 while Truman improves to 14-6-1.
Series history with Truman:  Truman leads the all-time series 7-3-1. Washburn won the first meeting second of three meetings last season with the Bulldogs taking a 2-1 victory in Topeka. The Bulldogs won in the MIAA postseason tournament semis in Warrensburg.

About the Griffons:
Quick Kicks: The Griffons enter weekend action wth a 1-4-1 record after dropping their MIAA opener 1-0 to Nebraska-Omaha.
About the coach: Jeff Hansen is 5-31-4 in his third year as the Griffons' head coach. Hansen comes to Missouri Western after a two-year stint at Central Missouri State as the assistant women's soccer coach. Hansen also has previous collegiate coaching experience at Missouri Southern State University where he was a student-athlete.
Series history: The Lady Blues lead the all-time series 5-1-0 after winning both matches last season by a combined score of 13-1. Missouri Western's only win in the series was in the very first meeting when the Griffons won 2-1 on Sept. 28, 2005 for the very first win in the program's history.

Last meeting with MWSU:  Oct. 19, 2007 - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Washburn's Danielle Ayala scored the first of her three goals of the evening 35 seconds into the match as the Lady Blues rolled to a 6-0 win over Missouri Western. The Lady Blues will play host to Central Missouri at 7 p.m.  Ayala's hat trick was the third of the season for the Lady Blues as one of Jessica Mainz's two this season has come against Missouri Western in their first meeting earlier this year.
Ayala scored her second goal less than two minutes later at the 3:18 mark as Manon Englehardt assisted on both of Ayala's first two goals on crosses.
The Lady Blues would score right before the half as Lisa Fahey scored from 10 yards out on an assist from Traci Nigg to put Washburn up 3-0 entering halftime.
In the second half it was all Lady Blues as they outshot the Griffons 21 to 2. Ayala scored her third goal of the match in the 48th minute from 25 yards out over the goalkeeper's head pushing the lead to 4-0.
In the 63rd minute, Brie Forman, who will be honored before the start of the game against the Jennies, scored her first career goal on an assist from Mainz.
Danielle Sicard scored her first collegiate goal in the 83rd minute wrapping up the 6-0 for the Lady Blues.
Ashley Klone picked up the shutout in goal for the Lady Blues, the fifth of her career.
For the match, Washburn held a 30 to 4 advantage in shots.
The Lady Blues outscored the Griffons in their two matches this season 13-1.

Lady Blues Soccer History:
Washburn is 48-38-20 (.545) all-time in its fifth season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 30-27-15 (.481). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 22-15-8 and they are 19-19-9 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-4-3.

Blue Notes:
• The Lady Blues' Kaydi Hooker, Jessica Mainz and Lisa Fahey have all made starts in 69 career games setting a new Washburn record breaking the previous record of 66 held by Jenna Lawless.
Jessica Mainz has 101 career points with 43 goals and 15 assists.

Up Next:
Following the game with the Griffons, the Lady Blues will take on Central Missouri against on Sept. 25 with another MIAA match at Southwest Baptist on Sept. 27. Washburn will play its final non-conference match at Rockhurst in Kansas City on Oct. 1 before returning to Yager Stadium for three straight home matches starting with Missouri Southern on Oct. 4.
