Lady Blues soccer team hits the road for match ups with UCM and SBU

Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team will hit the road for three straight road matches as they will take on Central Missouri on Sept. 25 for the second time in two weeks in Warrensburg then face Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo., on Sept. 27. The Lady Blues will play Rockhurst in Kansas City in their final non-conference match of the season on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. on the Hawks' campus. The Lady Blues dropped a 1-0 decision to the Jennies on Sept. 13 in Topeka. Washburn won its first MIAA match of the season on Sept. 20 in a 4-0 win over Missouri Western in Yager Stadium.

Last time out for the Lady Blues:
Sept. 20, 2008 • Washburn 4, Missouri Western 0 -- TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team tossed a shutout in a 4-0 win over Missouri Western at Yager Stadium. With the win, Washburn improves to 4-3-1 and 1-2-0 in MIAA action. The Griffons fell to 1-6-1 and 0-4-0 in conference play.
The Lady Blues led from start to finish as Lauren Henry scored her third goal of the season on an assist from Ashley Taylor from 10 yards out in the 29th minute of play. It would be the only goal of the half as the Lady Blues took a 1-0 lead at the break. Washburn outshot the Griffons 16 to 1 in the first 45 minutes of play.
In the second half, Traci Nigg put Washburn up 2-0 with her first goal of the season from 15 yards out in the 60th minute on pass from Henry.
Washburn went up 3-0 as Jessica Mainz scored her third goal of the season and the first of two goals of the evening as she followed in a rebound off a Manon Englehardt shot which popped up in front of the net off the top of the crossbar in the 64th minute. Mainz's second goal came 11:59 later as she scored off a pass from Nicole Tomes.
Jenny Persons picked up her second win in goal with the shutout collecting one save facing three total shots.
Washburn outshot the Griffons 26 to 3 in the match. Washburn also held a 4 to 0 advantage in corner kicks.  
About Central Missouri:
Quick Kicks: The Jennies enter the week with a 5-1-1 record and a 3-0-0 mark in the MIAA. Central topped then No. 5-ranked Nebraska-Omaha 3-1 last time out.
About the coach: Lewis Theobald is in his second season at the helm of the Jennies soccer program. His overall record is 18-5-5. He led the Jennies to the first conference title in school history with a 13-4-4 record in his first season. He was the first assistant at Division I Indiana State where he was the lead recruiter before coming to UCM. He is a 1999 graduate of the University of Kansas.
Last meeting with Central  - Sept. 13, 2008 - Washburn out-shot Central Missouri 9-5 in the second half but could never equalize a first-half goal from the Jennies as they defeated the Lady Blues 1-0 Saturday at Yager Stadium in WU's home and MIAA opener. UCM goalkeeper Lauren Bamvakais stopped five Washburn shots on goal, including a penalty kick from Jessica Mainz in the 29th minute of the first half that would have tied the game. At 14:58 UCM's Melanie Hall scored unassisted as she dribbled the ball up the middle and fired it in from 20 yards out. The penalty kick was the Lady Blues' only shot on goal in the first half. They put four on in the second half but never found the back of the net. UCM won the overall shot battle 13-12 and Washburn held a 7-5 advantage on corner kicks. Danielle Sicard and Angela Wiseman each had two shots and one on goal. Hall led UCM with four shots.
Series history with Central Missouri:  The Jennies lead the all-time series 4-5-1. Washburn has won three of the last four meetings with UCM taking the first meeting last season 1-0 in Warrensburg. Washburn won the return trip by the Jennies to Topeka 1-0 on Oct. 20.

About the Bearcats:
Quick Kicks: Southwest Baptist enters the week with a 4-0-0 record and a 3-0-0 record in conference play. SBU will play host to Emporia State on Sept. 25th before facing Washburn on Sept. 27.
About the coach: Ben Wade is in his third season at SBU and has compiled a 26-21-12 all-time record.
Series history: SBU leads the all-time series 4-3-3. After dropping the first four games in the series between the schools, the Lady Blues have gone 3-0-3 in the last six meetings against SBU. The last four matches have gone to double overtime.

Last meeting with SBU:  Oct. 27, 2007 - BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues wrapped up the No.3 seed in next weekend's MIAA Postseason Soccer tournament with a 2-1 double overtime win over Southwest Baptist on Jessica Mainz's 15th goal of the season. The Lady Blues took the lead early in the 16th minute as Danielle Ayala scored to put Washburn up 1-0. The goal was the only one of the first half for either team. In the second half, both teams were scoreless until Dominie Emmanuel scored in the 77th minute to tie the score at 1-1. After a scoreless first overtime, Mainz ended the game on an assist from Ayala sending the Lady Blues back to Topeka with the 2-1 win. It was the third overtime win for the Lady Blues all-time once a match entered extra periods as the Lady Blues are now 3-6-19 all-time. Mainz also has two of the three “golden goals.” Ashley Klone picked up the win in goal for the Lady Blues with five saves improving to 7-2-1 in net for Washburn this season.

Lady Blues Soccer History:
Washburn is 49-39-20 (.545) all-time in its fifth season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 30-27-15 (.481). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 22-15-8 and they are 19-19-9 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-4-3.

Blue Notes:
Start Chart: The Lady Blues' Kaydi Hooker, Jessica Mainz and Lisa Fahey have all made starts in 71 career games setting a new Washburn record breaking the previous record of 66 held by Jenna Lawless. The Washburn record for career games played is 77 held by Amanda Geist. The MIAA record for career games played and starts is 85 held by Truman's Sara Murray. If all three play in each remaining regular season match played this season, they will tie the MIAA record.
The Mainz Points: Jessica Mainz has 105 career points with 45 goals and 15 assists. Her 105 points is the third-most in MIAA history. Her 45 career goals are the third-most in MIAA history trailing Ashley Munnelly with 53 and Sara Murray with 59 on the career chart. Her 15 career assists is tied for ninth all-time in the MIAA.
The Klone Wars: Sophomore goalie Ashley Klone currently has the school record for goals against average with 0.84. She is ranked in the top 10 in eight career categories and her nine wins rank second all-time at Washburn in goal.
Oh Henry: Lauren Henry needs two more goals this season to tie Meagan Horvath and Ashley Taylor for fourth on the freshman single-season goal chart. Jessica Mainz has the record with 13 set in 2005.

Up Next:
Following the match at Southwest Baptist on Sept. 27. Washburn will play its final non-conference match at Rockhurst in Kansas City on Oct. 1 before returning to Yager Stadium for three straight home matches starting with Missouri Southern on Oct. 4.
