Monica Miesner had a double-double and
Jessica Wade hit .727 as the Lady Blues swept Southern Indiana, 25-16, 25-17, 25-20, in the first match Friday of the Missouri-St. Louis Invitational. No. 2 Washburn improved to 5-0 and will play Colorado Mines at 3 p.m. to wrap up Friday's action.
Miesner was the only player to reach double figures in kills with 15 and she had 22 digs. She now has 1,462 career digs and needs one more to move to sixth and five more to move into fifth in Washburn history.
Molly Smith had 16 digs and
Kate Hampson and
Amanda Guess shared the setting duties with Hampson getting 26 assists and Guess getting 12.
Wade had eight kills and no errors in 11 attempts and she had three service aces. Smith tied a career high with four aces.
Washburn was behind 3-0 early in the first set then went on a 10-0 run to take an 18-7 lead. They were down 1-0 in the second set and went on a 6-0 run to lead 6-1 and then in the final set they led throughout and held off the Screaming Eagles late. USI got within one point at 21-20 but the Lady Blues went on a 4-0 run to clinch their fourth straight three-set sweep.
Washburn had six total blocks with four players contributing twice while USI had seven blocks. The Lady Blues hit .274 while USI had a .102 attack percentage.
Meg Buschman led USI with eight kills and Janae Curnutt had 10 digs.
