Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team returns home this week for the first edition of the Turnpike Tussle when they will play host to Emporia State on Thursday night in Yager Stadium with match time set for 6 p.m. The Lady Blues will then take on Northwest Missouri for the second time in nine days when they will face the Bearcats on Oct. 17 at 6 p.m.
Match Thirteen | Emporia State Hornets
Team notes: The Bearcats are 1-9-1 and 1-7-0 entering the match with the Lady Blues. ESU has lost their last six matches with their last win coming on Sept. 17 at Missouri Western in a 1-0 victory.
About the coach: Jim Schneiderhahn is 8-58-3 in his fourth year at ESU and 47-102-9 in his ninth year as a head coach. He came to ESU after serving as an assistant coach at Tulane University. He was the head coach at Benedictine from 2000-04.
About the Hornets: ESU is led by Ashley Hill who has three goals this season. Sarah Anderson has two goals with two assists and has attempted a team-high 23 shots with 12 on goal. The Hornets have been outshot 241 to 82 this season. In net, Nikki Schmitz has a 2.28 goal against average with 19 goals scored and 58 saves. She has the team's lone shutout victory in a 1-0 win over Missouri Western.
Series history with the Hornets: Washburn leads the all-time series 8-3-1 and have won the last eight meetings. Washburn has outscored the Hornets 15-1 in the last five matches.

Lisa Fahey all contributed to Washburn's two goals as the Lady Blues beat Emporia State 2-1 Saturday at Yager Stadium on Senior Day. Emporia State scored first when Persons tried to clear away an ESU chance. The ball was deflected back and Alison Germany was there to shoot it in the empty net at the 10:15 mark.
The Lady Blues tied the game five minutes before halftime when Taylor scored her fifth goal of the year from the left side on a pass from Ayala.
Twelve minutes into the second half Ayala scored her eighth of the year on a pass from Mainz. She received the pass right in front of the goal line and shot it in from the right side.
Mainz led WU with four shots and Taylor had three and tied Ayala with a team-high two on goal.
The Lady Blues out-shot the Hornets 15-4 and put nine on goal. ESU's only shot on target was Germany's goal.
Washburn took eight corner kicks while ESU had just one.
Last time out for Emporia State: (Oct. 10, 2009) MARYVILLE, Mo.—Northwest Missouri State forward Andrea Tritz' fifth goal of the season and 13th of her career was the difference in a 1-0 Bearcat win against Emporia State on a cold and blustery day at Bearcat Pitch Saturday. It's the ninth win for Northwest this season, which is one shy of the program record. Andrea Freeman was credited with her first assist of the season on Tritz's goal, which came in the 71st minute. The Bearcats out shot Emporia State 15-4 and had four corner kicks to two for the Hornets. Northwest goalkeeper Kira Lazenby needed to make just one save to help the Bearcat defense record its seventh shutout of the season. Lazenby has allowed nine goals in 13 games this season and extended her program record for career shutouts to 15. Tina Commons had two shots and Ashley Hill had one shot on goal for the Hornets.

Team notes: The Bearcats are 9-3-1 and 5-3-1 in MIAA action this season. They are also 6-1-1 at home. The Bearcats topped Washburn on Oct. 8 and then topped Emporia State 1-0. They have recorded shutouts in three of their last four matches. Prior to taking on the Lady Blues, the Bearcats will face Truman on Oct. 15.
About the coach: Tracy Hoza is in her sixth season as the Bearcats head coach. She is 36-60-12 at Northwest.
About the Bearcats: Northwest is led by Andrea Tritz and her five goals and an assist for 11 points. She has recorded 27 shots on goal. Sara Meidlinger has four assists and Kelsey Sanders has three assists. Kira Lazenby has a 0.67 goal against average in net for the Bearcats allowing only nine goals with 65 saves and seven shutouts.
Series history with the Bearcats: The Lady Blues lead the all-time series 8-2-3. The win on Oct. 8 was the first win for the Bearcats since 3-1 win on Sept. 10, 2003. Five of the last seven matches have been shutout wins for the Lady Blues with the lone goal for the Bearcats was in a 1-1 double overtime tie on Oct. 12, 2007 in Topeka.

Last meeting with the Bearcats: (Oct. 18, 200-) -- MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues had their four-match winning streak snapped in a 2-0 loss at Northwest Missouri. Washburn outshot the Bearcats 16 to 8 including an 8 to 3 advantage in the first 45 minutes. However the Bearcats took advantage of a Lady Blues penalty in the box and Kelsey Sanders converted a penalty kick in the 32nd minute to opening the scoring. Sanders added her second goal of the match in the 80th minute putting Northwest up 2-0. The Lady Blues had six shots on goal compared to four for Northwest.
Leah Talley and
Lauren Henry each had three shot attempts. Washburn held a 4 to 1 advantage in corner kicks as the teams combined for 25 fouls with 14 whistles coming against the Bearcats.

Oct. 11, 2009 - OMAHA, Neb. -- The Washburn Lady Blues suffered their second straight shutout loss in a 1-0 defeat at Nebraska-Omaha at the UNO Soccer Field. The Mavericks scored the only goal of the match when Jerica Kuncl scored in the 19th minute on an assist by Jessica Powers. Overall, the Mavericks outshot the Lady Blues 20 to 3 including an 11 to 1 advantage in the first half. Washburn had two shots on goal - one by

Ashley Klone had five saves in net for Washburn.
