TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues knocked off Emporia State for the ninth-straight match as they won the first edition of the Turnpike Tussle 2-1 in Yager Stadium. Washburn (7-6-0, 4-5-0 MIAA) will be back in action on Saturday when they will face Northwest Missouri at 6 p.m. in Yager Stadium.
Lauren Henry scored her third goal of the season, which was the match-winner on a pair of passes from
Ashley Taylor and
Leah Talley.
Emporia State scored the first goal of the match when Tina Commons scored on an assist from Sarah Whiteside in the 11th minute. It was Common's first goal of the season.
Washburn knotted the score off a corner kick when Stovall took the short pass and found Talley from 3-yards out as she scored her sixth goal of the season. The assist was Stovall's seventh of the season tying for the second-most in school history trailing the school record of nine set last season by
Jessica Mainz.
Ashley Klone picked up the win in next for Washburn recording one save facing three shots.
Overall, Washburn outshot the Hornets 11 to 3 and had a 10 to 0 advantage in corner kicks.
