Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods return to action on Monday night when they will face the Bethany Swedes in Lee Arena at 7 p.m. The Ichabods (2-0) are coming off a 73-50 win over Saint Mary on Nov. 19. The Swedes are 1-3 this season and will take part in the Colorado-Colorado Springs Classic this weekend. The Swedes fell 97-57 in an exhibition game with Emporia State on Nov. 18.

Ichabods on Radio . . .
The game will be broadcast live on AM 580 WIBW. The game can also be heard on the internet at www.wusports.com by following the “Live Audio” link under basketball. Bruce Steinbrock will be the play-by-play voice of the Ichabods and former WU quarterback Mark Elliott will be the color analyst.

The Coaches. . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach Bob Chipman begins his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 664-264 (.715) overall and he has 421 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman has never faced Saint Mary.
Bethany head coach Clair Oleen is in his 29th season on the sidelines in Hahn Gymnasium - two years as the late George Stephens' assistant coach (earning KCAC titles in 1980 and 1981) and 12 years as the women's basketball head coach (winning 208 games, one KCAC title, 10 NAIA play-off appearances and numerous national rankings).
Coach Oleen now enters his 17th season as head coach of the men's basketball program.
During his time as men's coach, the Swedes have won 215 games, won three KCAC Tournament Championships, earned several national rankings and qualified for three NAIA National Tournaments. The 2003 team played in the NAIA National Championship game, finishing as national runners-up. That year coach Oleen was honored as the NAIA Division II Coach of the Year, while the team was honored by then Kansas Governor, Kathleen Sebelius, with a state proclamation on April 10, 2003.

Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Nov. 19, 2009) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods used a balance effort to improve to 2-0 on the season with a 73-50 win over Saint Mary in Lee Arena. Washburn will be back in action on Nov. 23 when they will play host to Bethany at 7 p.m.
Washburn trailed only once at 7-6 in the game while holding the Spires to 31 percent shooting in the opening frame building a lead as many as 14 in the first 20 minutes of action.
Leading by eight in the second half at 37-29, the Ichabods put together a 17-4 run over the next six-plus minutes to pull away from Saint Mary en route to a 23-point win.
Washburn placed three in double figures with William McNeill coming off the bench to score a team-high 13 points. De'Andre Washington and Logan Stutz each scored 12 points and Stutz also recorded his first Washburn double double in adding 13 rebounds with nine coming on the offensive glass. The 13 rebounds was also a career high for Stutz.
Eric Avant and Jeb Greenberg each had 14 to pace the Spires attack.
Washburn shot 41 percent for the game including an 18 of 39 (46 percent) performance in the second half. Saint Mary was 18 of 55 for the game for a 33 percent average.
Washburn recorded 18 assists on its 31 field goals with Virgil Philistin recording six. Nate Wallace added four steals in the game as the Ichabods forced 21 Spire turnovers leading to 20 points off turnovers for Washburn. The Ichabods also outscored the Spires 42 to 12 in the paint.

About Bethany . . .
Bethany is 1-3 on the season with three of the four games on the road. They defeated Haskell Indian Nations 97-84 for their lone win. Senior guard Rodd Williams averages 17.8 points per game with 12 made three pointers. Jason Schneider contributes 10.3 points per game off the bench.

Last time out for the Swedes (Prior to Nov. 20/21 CLassic at Colorado-Colorado springs . . .
Nov. 18, 2009-Five Hornets reached double figures as Emporia State rolled to a 97-57 win over Bethany on Wednesday night in White Auditorium. Tim Niles led ESU in scoring for the second straight night with 22 points in 23 minutes.
ESU scored the first six points of the game on back to back three pointers by Lamar Wilbern only to see Bethany go on a 12-2 run and take a 12-8 lead at the 15:29 mark. The Hornets would score the next 12 points and would never trail.
Niles was joined in double figures by Matt Boswell with 15 points, Jeremiah Box with 13, Adam Holthaus with 12 points and Doug Moore with a career high 12 points. Boswell added a career high eight rebounds to lead all players while Taylor Euler dished a game high four assists.

Series Notes . . .
The Ichabods and the Swedes have not met since March 2, 1989 in the first round of the NAIA District 10 playoffs with the Ichabods winning 91-63. The Ichabods lead the series 6-4 and have won the last five games. The first meeting was during the 1914-15 season with the Ichabods picking up a 48-30 win.

Ichabod Basketball History . . .
Washburn is 1,362-949 (.682 in 2311 games) in its 104th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 421-184 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 332-59 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 26th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.

Tip Ins. . .
• With the win over the Bobcats, the Ichabods are 72-31-1 in their first game official game of the season. The last time the Ichabods lost their season lid-lifter was on Nov. 11, 2007 at Kansas when they fell 92-60 to the Jayhawks.
• All-time, the Ichabods are 25-1 with the lone loss coming on Nov. 16, 1990 when they lost to Friends 89-88 in the Lee Arena debut.
• Entering his 31st season the Ichabod bench, Bob Chipman is 28-3 in Washburn's first game of the season.

Up Next . . .
The Ichabods will be back in action on Nov. 24 when they take on Kansas Wesleyan.  Washburn will then host Baker on Nov. 28 before opening MIAA play on Dec. 2 at Nebraska-Omaha. Washburn will then take on Northwest Missouri on Dec. 5 and then return home to take on Truman on Dec. 12.
