TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues opened the game on a 15-0 run and cruised to a 102-43 season-opening win over Southwestern (Kan.) College on Saturday night at Lee Arena. Washburn will travel to Springfield, Mo. on Tuesday to battle Drury at 7 p.m.
Washburn took the first and only lead of the game at 2-0 on a
Dayna Rodriguez layup a minute in. The lead ballooned to 34 at 50-16 and the Lady Blues led 50-20 at the break. Washburn shot 55 percent, 17-of-31, in the first half, including 7-of-11 from behind the arc as 11 Lady Blues scored.
The Lady Blues started the second half on a 19-3 run to open a 69-23 lead with 11:19 to play. Washburn increased the lead to 59 with 4:41 to play and closed out the game by that same margin. The Lady Blues held Southwestern to 27 percent shooting from the field, including 13 percent from three point range.
Rodriguez led Washburn with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting.
Hope Gregory added 11 points and
Stevi Schultz chipped in 10 on 4-of-5 shooting.
Annjelina Robinson led the Lady Builders with nine points.
The Lady Blues finished the game shooting 54 percent on 38-of-70 shooting, including 12 three-pointers.
Washburn forced 24 Lady Builder turnovers and turned those into 38 points. WU outscored Southwestern 40-12 in the paint and won the battle of the boards 46-21.
