Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods will open MIAA action on Wednesday when they will travel to Omaha, Neb., to face the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha at 7:30 p.m. in Sapp Fieldhouse. Both teams enter the game with perfect 5-0 marks.
Ichabods on Radio . . .
The game will be broadcast live on KTPK 106.9 FM. The game can also be heard on the internet at www.wusports.com by following the “Live Audio” link under basketball.
Bruce Steinbrock will be the play-by-play voice of the Ichabods and former WU quarterback Mark Elliott will be the color analyst.
The Coaches. . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 667-265 (.715) overall and he has 421 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. 2-1 against Nebraska-Omaha.
Nebraska-Omaha head coach Derrin Hansen is in his fifth year at Nebraska-Omaha and overall as a head coach. He is 73-50 with a .587 winning percentage. His winning percentage ranks fourth all-time among UNO coaches with at least four years at the school. Hansen served as the assistant coach at UNO from 1998-2005 before taking over for the 2005-06 season.
Hansen is a 1991 graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan. He played for the Plainsmen and helped lead them to the Division III semifinal in 1987-88. He coached high school for two seasons after graduating and then spent two years at Nebraska-Kearney from 1993-95 as a graduate assistant and two years at Mid-Plains CC from 1995-98.
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Nov. 28, 2009) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods again used a blistering second half improving to 5-0 on the season in a 100-60 win over Baker on Saturday night in Lee Arena. The Ichabods also improved to 61-4 in games in which the Ichabods reach at least 100 points.
The Ichabods trailed only 3-2 and only for 30 seconds in the win over the Wildcats. The Ichabods led by as many as 17 points in the opening half on three different occasions taking a 13-point lead into halftime at 48-35. The Ichabods were 17 of 31 from the in the first half converting 55 percent of their shots. The Wildcats were also over 50 percent for the half hitting 12 of 23 attempts including 7 of 14 from 3-point range.
In the second half, the Ichabods forced 10 turnovers leading to 14 points off turnovers stretching the lead to as many as 42 at 98-56. Washburn heated up to 57 percent in the second half hitting 20 of 35 attempts while turning up the defense holding the Wildcats to 8 of 28 shooting for a 29 percent average.
De'Andre Washington and
Logan Stutz each had 20 points and William McNeill had 18, who scored 14 in the second half on 6 of 6 shooting from the field.
Nate Daniels scored 12 hitting three field goals. Washington and
Dezahn Otis each had four assists and
Bryce Simons had five steals. Stutz was also 10 of 10 from the free throw line.
Sam Kenney led the Wildcats with 15 points off the bench.
Overall the Ichabods forced 19 turnovers while committing nine turnovers. The Ichabods finished with 26 points off turnovers and scored 15 second chance points compared to five for the Wildcats. The Washburn bench also outscored the Wildcats 47 to 21.
About Nebraska-Omaha . . .
The Mavericks are 5-0 entering the game and have outscored their opponents by an average of 90.8 to 70.4 points per game. They are led by Tyler Bullock who is averaging 19.0 ppg with 3.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. He has hit 35 of 52 shots from the field for a 67 percent average. He has not attempted a 3-pointer this season. Jeff Martin is averaging 13.8 ppg and Dion Curry is scoring 13.2 ppg. Andrew Bridger is scoring 7.0 ppg while averaging 9.2 assists per game.

(Nov. 28, 2009) GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - Tyler Bullock led the Mavericks in scoring for the fourth straight game as his 24 points helped UNO to a 74-69 win over Wayne State (Neb.) in the final game of the SUNHEAT College Basketball Classic.
Bullock was 7-of-14 from the field and 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Dion Curry scored 16 points and Jeff Martin added 13. Curry led UNO with 11 rebounds as he recorded a double-double.
The Mavs shot 46 percent in the game while Wayne State was 45 percent. Bullock's free throw shooting, along with Andrew Bridger's 6-of-6 performance, helped UNO shoot 79 percent from the line.
The Wildcats won the rebounding battle, 33-26. Amry Shelby led WSC with 18 points.
After two ties in the first two minutes, the Mavs led the rest of the game. They held a 37-32 lead at halftime.
Series Notes . . .
This is the 51st meeting in school history and Washburn holds a 32-18 lead in the series. Wednesday's meeting will be only the third game in Omaha since Feb. 20, 1974 following a Dec. 6, 1986 meeting and a Jan. 24, 2009 meeting last season. The Ichabods have won two of the last three overall. The two played at least once a year from 1947-48 through 1973-74, a period of 27 straight years. The series began in 1933-34 and WU won the first nine meetings. • The two have met in overtime twice with each team winning once.
Last meeting with Nebraska-Omaha . . .
Jan. 24, 2009 -- OMAHA, Neb. - Four Ichabods scored in double figures and they came back from an 18-point deficit but they couldn't hold on in a 93-88 loss at Nebraska-Omaha's Sapp Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
Washburn fell to 10-8 and 6-5 in the MIAA while the Mavericks jumped to 13-5 and 7-4 in the league.
DeAndre Eggins scored 24 points with three 3-pointers and Darnell Kimble came off the bench to score 19 points off a 7-of-10 performance. Lekheythan Malone scored 17 and Paul Byers had 13. Eggins led the Ichabods and was one rebound short of a double-double with nine boards.
The Mavericks led by 18 at 10:18 of the first half and they were up 54-41 at halftime. They led by as much as 13 in the second half before Eggins made a lay-up and a free throw at 6:29 to give WU a 77-75 lead, its first of the day. UNO jumped back ahead and led by as much as eight down the stretch. Eggins made three straight free throws with 20 seconds remaining to pull WU within three but the Mavs followed with two more free throws to hold on.
Washburn shot 44 percent while UNO shot 58 percent, the highest percentage allowed by WU this year. WU won the rebound battle, 38-28 and Paul Byers had five rebounds to give him 503 in his career. He became the 14th player to reach 500 career rebounds at Washburn and just the second to get 500 rebounds and at least 75 blocks.

The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 426-184 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.

The Ichabods are 335-59 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 26th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena. The Ichabods have won 15 straight regular season non-conference home games and 38 of their last 41 regular season non-conference games home.
