Lady Blues soccer team to wrap up season facing Lions & Griffons

Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team will wrap up the 2009 season their final road trip to Joplin, Mo., to face Missouri Southern (4-14-0, 2-12-0 MIAA) on Thursday and then return home to Yager Stadium for the season finale and senior night as they will play host to Missouri Western (8-9-2, 6-7-2 MIAA) at 6 p.m. The four Lady Blues seniors: Lauren Lawless, Keeley Lambeth, Ashley Taylor and Angela Wiseman will all be honored in pregame festivities.

Match Nineteen | Missouri Southern
Team notes: The Lions are 4-14-0 and 2-12-0 in MIAA play entering Thursday night's match. The Lions have dropped their last seven matches last recording a 2-1 win over Emporia State on Oct. 1.

About the coach: Trevor Wachsman is in his seventh year as head coach of the Missouri Southern women's soccer program. Formerly a two-year assistant at the University of Northern Colorado, he was named the second head coach in the history of the Lions on April 30, 2003. He is 45-61-19 as the Lions' head coach.

About the Lions: Stephanie Heines leads the Lions in scoring with seven points on three goals and one assist. Randi Russell has started 17 matches in net and has a 2.01 goal against average with 102 saves. She has recorded one shutout on the season.

Series history with the Lions:  Washburn leads all-time series is tied 5-4-5 with the Lions. Washburn has won the last three matches and the Lions have not recorded a win in the series in the last seven meetings. The Lions' last win in the series was on Sept. 30, 2006 in a 1-0 overtime win in Joplin. Seven of the 14 matches have gone into overtime with five going into double overtime. The Lady Blues are 1-3-2 all-time in matches played in Joplin.

Last meeting with the Lions: (Oct. 3, 2009) -- TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team won their fourth match in a row scoring goals in each half in a 2-0 win over Missouri Southern.
Washburn's Brittany Tracz scored her second goal of the season and what would turn out to be the game-winner at the 38:00 minute mark on an assist from Tia Stovall. It was Stovall's sixth of the season. Stovall hit Tracz with a drop pass who then connected from 18 yards out into the right corner of the net by Missouri Southern's Randi Russell.
The Lady Blues' final goal of the night came off a free kick by Ashley Hynek whose kick was headed by Leah Talley to Ashley Taylor to who headed it in in the 71st minute putting Washburn up 2-0.
Ashley Klone picked up her 11th shuout win of her career and her second straight collecting three saves while facing seven shots.
Washburn outshot the Lions 12 to 7 and had a 7 to 1 advantage on corner kicks.

Last time out for Missouri Southern: (Oct. 31, 2009) Maryville, Mo. -- For the second straight match, the Missouri Southern Lions suffered a tough 1-0 setback, this time at the hands of the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats Saturday afternoon (Oct. 31) in Maryville, Mo. The only goal of the match was scored by the Bearcats' Andrea Tritz, who tallied an unassisted goal just two minutes before halftime at the 43:19 mark. The Lions were out-shot 14-6 overall and 9-4 on-goal. Stephanie Heines and Megan Stueve each led the Lions with two shots. Tritz led everybody with five shot-attempts. One match after recording a career-high 12 saves, Randi Russell was again superb in the net for the Lions (4-14, 2-12 MIAA). Russell made eight stops to keep the Lions within striking distance throughout the contest. Russell has now made 20 saves against only two goals allowed over the past two matches. Kira Lazenby made four saves for the Bearcats (11-6-1, 7-6-1 MIAA).
Match Twenty | Missouri Western Griffons
Team notes: The Griffons are 8-9-2 and 6-7-2 this season setting a school-record for single-season wins. They are 5-3-1 at home and 2-5-1 away from St. Joseph in road matches this season. The Griffons have gone 3-0-2 in their last five matches tying Truman 1-1 in double overtime last time out.

About the coach: Jeff Hansen is 15-54-8 in his fourth year as the Griffons' head coach. Hansen came to Missouri Western after a two-year stint at Central Missouri State as the assistant women's soccer coach. Hansen also has previous collegiate coaching experience at Missouri Southern State University where he was a student-athlete.

About the Griffons: Missouri Western is led by Abby Widrig and Jessica Martin who each have scored seven goals while handing out four assists this season. Audrey Henderson has scored five goals with three assists.

Series history with the Griffons:  The Lady Blues lead the all-time series 7-2-0 and have outscored the Griffons 29-4 in the seven wins. Missouri Western's snapped a seven-match Lady Blues' winning streak in the first meeting this season in a 3-0 win. Washburn is 3-2-0 in St. Joseph and the Lady Blues are 4-0 in matches played in Topeka.

Last meeting with the Griffons: (Sept. 19, 2009) -- ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues' seven-match winning streak over Missouri Western on the soccer pitch came to an end with a 3-0 loss to the Griffons. The Lady Blues outshot the Griffons 19 to 11 including 14 to 5 in the second half, but could not get any attempts past MWSU goalkeeper Joyce Endicott who finished with six saves. Ashley Taylor, Brandy Hirsch and Kyleigh Olmstead all had three shot attempts to pace the Lady Blues attack. Abby Widrig had two goals for the Griffons and Jessica Martin added the third for Missouri Western.

Last time out for Missouri Western: (Nov. 3, 2009) KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – After postponing their soccer game four times due to poor weather the Missouri Western and Truman State women's soccer teams were able to play their game in Kirksville, Mo. on Tuesday, November 3. Despite being out shot 22 to three the Griffons were able to walk away with a 1-1 double overtime tie against one of the top teams in the MIAA. Western sits at 8-9-2 overall and 6-7-2 in MIAA play with one game remaining in their regular season. Western got on the board first in the 15th minute of the contest when Mary Ohm scored her second goal of the season off of a Desi Swanson assist. The Griffons had three shots in the first half and then did not have another shot the next 65 minutes of play. Truman State tied the score up at one in the 80th minute when Kelsy Twellman blasted one by Griffons goal keeper Jenna Weis. The goal marked Twellman's third of the season as she scored off a Riley Mahn assist. The Bulldogs had a combined 17 shots in the second half and first overtime period and had 11 corner kicks to the Griffons zero in the game. Jenna Weis made nine saves in the contest as she sits at 4-5-2 overall while Allison Taylor made one save for the Bulldogs. She sits a 0-0-1 on the season. 
Last time out for the Lady Blues:
Nov. 1, 2009 - EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues swept the season series while topping Emporia State for the 10th straight match in a 2-1 in Emporia. Neither team scored in the first as Washburn outshot Emporia State 9-6. In the second half, Keeley Lambeth scored her third goal of the season as her shot sailed over the goalkeeper's head in the 74th minute of the match.
Tia Stovall scored her fifth of the season when she put a pass from Ashley Taylor into the back of the net at the 82:40 mark of the match.
Emporia State scored their only goal of the match in the 88th minute when Tina Commons scored her second goal of the season unassisted.
Washburn's Ashley Klone picked up the win in net for the Lady Blues collecting two saves while facing 11 shots.
The Lady Blues outshot the Hornets 19 to 11.

Lady Blues Soccer History:
Washburn is 69-51-22 (.560) all-time in its seventh season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 46-38-17 (.537). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 33-18-9 and they are 29-26-10 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-5-3.

Blue Notes:
Ashley Taylor's 50 career points (16 goals & 18 assists) is third all-time at Washburn. She is one of three to record at least 50 points in a career joining Jolene Silovsky (61) and Jessica Mainz (118).
• Taylor's 18 career assists are second all-time (Mainz - 24) at Washburn and her 16 career goals are tied for third all-time at Washburn.
Keeley Lambeth's game-winning goal against Northwest Missouri in overtime was her sixth of her career at Washburn - which is tied for second on the all-time chart.
Tia Stovall's eight assists this season are the most by a freshman in school history and tied for second on the school's single-season chart trailing Jessica Mainz's nine from 2008.
Leah Talley's team-leading six goals is third for fourth on the freshman single-season chart.
Angela Wiseman has played in 85 career games which is fifth on the career chart entering the final two games of the season. The school record is 87 held by Jessica Mainz, Kaydi Hooker and Lisa Fahey.

Up Next:
The Lady Blues will open the 2010 season in August as these games will be the final two of the 2009 season.
