About Western Washington . . .
The 9-1 Vikings, riding an eight-game winning streak and ranked No.23 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches/NCAA Division II Poll.
Western has held opponents to 55 or fewer points in each of its last four games. That last occurred in the early 1950s when the Vikings had six straight contests giving up 55 or less points, the last three of the 1952-53 season and the first three of the 1953-54 campaign. The last time Western accomplished that for four consecutive games in the same season was 1951-52.
The current stretch began at the WWU Chuck Randall Thanksgiving Classic with an 86-23 win over Academy of Art. That tied a school record for least points allowed which was originally set Jan. 19, 1963, in a 45-23 win over Saint Martin's. The Vikings established a school record in the first half of that contest, holding the Urban Knights to six points.
Western then put the clamps on Grand Canyon AZ, 70-55, to tie for the tourney title, and last week continued its stifling defense with wins over Simon Fraser BC, 96-43, on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium, and at Grand Canyon, 67-50.
In that four-game stretch, Western has limited the opposition to 29.9 percent (63-of-211) field-goal shooting and an average of 42.8 points.
On the season, the Vikings are giving up just 55.4 points per game on 36.7 percent (202-of-550) field-goal shooting. They are averaging 8.8 steals per game and 3.8 blocked shots.
Senior forward Derrick Webb tops three Western players averaging double-figure points with a 13.6 per game average and is second on the team in rebounds at 5.6.
Senior point guard Morris Anderson leads the Vikings in assists (4.8) and steals (2.9), and is averaging 11.3 points and 4.0 rebounds. He has missed just one of 31 free throws (96.8 percent), making his last 30 straight (school record is 37, Jared Stevenson, 1997-98), and is shooting 39.5 percent (17-of-43) on 3-pointers.
Senior forward Zach Bruce paces the squad in rebounds with a 7.0 average, and is scoring at a 10.6 clip on 56.3 percent field-goal accuracy (44-of-78).
Completing Western's starting five are senior guard Andrew Ready, who is averaging 7.3 points on 52.2 percent (24-of-46) floor accuracy, and 7-foot senior center Dave Vanderjagt, who is averaging 5.9 points and 4.1 rebounds and leads the team with 12 blocked shots.
Last time out for the Vikings. . .
(Dec. 5, 2009) Phoenix, Ariz. -- Western shot 59.5 percent (25-of-42) from the field, 66.7 percent (14-of-21) in the first half, as it defeated Grand Canyon, 67-50, in a non-league contest at Antelope Gymnasium. Webb had game highs of 15 points and six rebounds for the Vikings. Grand Canyon, which fell to 3-8, was led by the 14 points of reserve Rony Tchatchoua. Bruce had 14 points for the Vikings, Ready added 11, making all four of his field-goal attempts. Anderson contributed game highs of seven assists and five steals along with nine points and four rebounds. Western led by 14 points, 19-5, after the first 7:30, Ready scoring eight points by connecting on his first three shots, two from 3-point range. The Antelopes cut that advantage to eight, 35-27, at halftime, scoring seven of the last eight points in the period. They scored the first point of the second half, but Western responded with nine straight points, Anderson hitting a 3-pointer with 15:46 remaining to put the Vikings ahead by 16, 44-28. Grand Canyon never got closer than 11 after that, and Western's biggest lead was 20, 67-47, in the final two minutes.
Series Notes with Western Washington . . .
The meeting on the 17th will be the third between the two teams and the second time the teams have played in Las Vegas. The series is tied 1-1 with both meetings coming in the same season. On Dec. 16, 2000, the two teams played as part of the Las Vegas High Desert Classic with Western Washington taking a 72-70 win. The Vikings' Darnell Taylor hit a jumper in the lane as time expired for the two-point win. Eric Carter had a career-high 32 points with 20 coming in the first half. The Ichabods won the second meeting of the season on March 22, 2001 at the NCAA Elite Eight national semifinals with the Ichabods taking a 96-90 win over the Vikings putting the Ichabods in the national championship game.

But the Vikings could get no closer as the Bods hit all six of their final free throws in the final 24 seconds.
Washburn led by 12 points at halftime, 47-35, behind the outstanding shooting of Ryan Murphy, who went 8 for 12 off the bench, scoring 16 by the break.

The win pushes the Ichabods into the final game against Kentucky Wesleyan. This is the deepest into the Elite Eight the ichabods have ever advanced. In two previous trips to the Elite Eight, the Ichabods lost in the quarterfinals in the 1993 event and lost in the semis in the 1994 event.
Washburn led by 17 points with 2:04 remaining and by 14 with 1:42 to play, then had to withstand a furious rally by Western Washington. The Vikings closed within two points, 90-88, with 25 seconds remaining, but Shannon Kruger made four free throws and Auguste hit two with 7.5 seconds left to preserve the win in a game that ended at 1:15 a.m. Topeka time.
