Lady Blues remain unbeaten with OT win

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The eighth-ranked Lady Blues overcame an early double-digit deficit and beat Western Washington 72-70 on a pair of Amanda Fessenden free throws with 1.3 seconds remaining in overtime on Wednesday afternoon in Las Vegas. Washburn will wrap up play in the Great Western Shootout on Thursday at 1 p.m. CST against Central Washington.

The Lady Blues (8-0) came out ice cold and fell behind 13-0 to the previously unbeaten Vikings (5-1). Washburn started the game 0-of-12 from the field and didn't score until the 12:09 mark when Rose Hammond hit one of two free throws to make the score 13-1. Fessenden's lay-up with 11:17 to play in the first half was the first made field goal for Washburn and sparked a 16-2 run that tied the game at 17 with just over four minutes to play. The Lady Blues took their first lead of the game at 20-19 with 3:01 to play in the opening period. Two free throws from Hammond made it 22-19 at the break.

A 9-3 run to start the second half gave Western Washington a three point lead with just under 16 to play. The game swayed back-and-forth for much of the half with Washburn gaining its largest lead of the game at 41-36 with 10:05 to play. The Vikings tied the game at 45 with 6:12 remaining in regulation and neither team led by more than two the rest of the way.

The Lady Blues led 61-59 with just over a minute to play, but Jessica Summers tied the game on a pair of free throws with :48 to play. Hammond hit one of two from the charity stripe to give Washburn a 62-61 lead and Summers reciprocated with 16 seconds to play. A jumper by Hammond with one second remaining was off the mark and forced overtime.

Western Washington led by two on three separate occasions during the extra period, including 70-68 with 45 seconds to play. Cassie Lombardino nailed a hook shot in the lane with 28 ticks left to tie the game and set up the final possession for the Vikings. Summers missed a jumper in the lane, Alyssa Mullen grabbed the rebound and handed off to Fessenden who was fouled with 1.3 seconds on the clock. She nailed both free throws and then stole the ensuing inbounds pass to seal the win for the Lady Blues.

Hammond led Washburn with 23 points, while Fessenden added 14. Hope Gregory had a team-high eight rebounds as the Lady Blues outrebounded the Vikings 37-32.

Summers led all scorers with 37 points and added a game-high nine boards. Amanda Dunbar was held to 11 points, six under her season average, and without a three point field goal. She came into the game leading the NCAA-II in three-point shooting at 73.9 percent. The Vikings entered the game third in the NCAA as a team shooting 47 percent from beyond the arc, but hit only 1-of-11 attempts.

The game featured 20 ties, including nine in the final eight minutes of regulation and overtime.
