Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods (7-4, 1-3 MIAA) will take on a No. 1 ranked team for the first time since the 2003-04 season when they will face the second of three national foes on the road as they travel to Warrensburg, Mo., to take on the Central Missouri Mules who enter the game with a 11-0 overall record with a 4-0 MIAA mark. The Ichabods are coming off a 68-55 loss at No. 13 ranked Fort Hays State on Wednesday and will face No. 12 ranked Southwest Baptist on Jan. 5 in Bolivar, Mo., before returning home to face Missouri Southern on Jan. 9. The last time the Ichabods faced a No. 1-ranked team was on Jan. 14, 2004 when Washburn topped Northwest Missouri 72-63 in Maryville snapping the Bearcats' 26-game homecourt winning streak.

The Coaches. . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 669-269 (.716) overall and he has 421 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 23-19 against the Mules.
Central Missouri head coach Kim Anderson 169-59 (.738) in his eighth season on the Mules bench. He has led the Mules to the Final Four two times, winning three MIAA Tournament titles.
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Dec. 30, 2009) HAYS, Kan. -- A second half comeback attempt fell short as the Washburn Ichabods dropped a 68-55 decision to No. 13-ranked Fort Hays State. The Ichabods will be back in action in the second of three straight games against nationally-ranked teams on the road when they travel to No. 1-ranked Central Missouri on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Warrensburg.
The Ichabods (7-5, 1-4 MIAA) cut the 10-point halftime lead to six at 41-35 with 13:58 to go before the Tigers (10-1, 4-0 MIAA) pushed the lead back to 13 in the half with just over eight minutes to go. The Ichabods worked the deficit to eight at 59-51 on a 3-pointer by
Nate Wallace with 5:11 to go, but the Tigers responded with a 3-pointer of their own and the Ichabods would get no closer than nine the rest of the way.
The first half saw the Ichabods fall behind by as many as 13 at the 6:55 mark of the half before cutting the Fort Hays State advantage to seven on two difference ocassions before a late 3-pointer by the Tigers' Willie Hassell put the Tigers up 10 at 36-26 which was the score going into the break. The Ichabods were 10 of 27 in the half while the Tigers finished the opening stanza 15 of 28 for a 53 percent clip. The Tigers also hit 4 of 3 3-point attempts while Washburn was 3 of 10.
The Ichabods were led by
De'Andre Washington who scored 18 points with a team-high seven rebounds. Wallace finished in double figures with 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the field including a 3 of 3 performance from 3-point range.
Dominique Jones scored a team-high 21 points off the bench to pace the Tigers. Ken Bowman had a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Ichabods finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field hitting 20 of 50 attempts while the Tigers were 25 of 48 for a 52 percent average.
Washburn struggled from the free throw line hitting 8 of 18 attempts while committing 14 turnovers leading to 10 points for the Tigers.
Fort Hays held a 36 to 28 advantage on the glass as the Tiger reserves outscored the Ichabod bench 30 to 5.
About Central Missouri . . .
Central Missouri has four players averaging in double figures on the season: senior forward Sanijay Watts (21.2 ppg), senior guard Alex Moosmann (16.3 ppg), junior guard Bryce Brunz (10.8 ppg) and junior guard Ryan Harris (10.2 ppg). Senior forward Tremaine Luellen (9.5 ppg) also contributes more than nine points a game.
Watts (6-4, 215) nearly averages a double-double as he contributes a team-leading 9.4 rebounds per game to go along with his 21-point scoring average.
Rico Combs (5-8, 217) is shooting a team-best .654 percent from the field (34 of 52).
As a team, UCM is shooting .507 percent from the field hitting 346 of 683 and they are connecting on 99 of 233 3-point attempts for a 43 percent average. From the free throw line, the Mules are 179 of 239 hitting 75 percent. They have attempted 31 more charity tosses than their opponents, but two less than their opponents in MIAA play.
Last time out for the Mules . . .
(Dec. 28, 2009) PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The No. 1 Central Missouri Mules rolled in their first game back from the holiday break, taking out Pittsburg State 83-60 on Monday night at John Lance Arena. It was the 10th consecutive win for the Mules in the series.
The Mules (11-0, 4-0 MIAA) took care of business from the start in the first period, jumping out to a 15-5 lead in the opening minutes, paced by eight points from senior forward Sanijay Watts. The Gorillas (6-5, 0-4 MIAA) cut the advantage to 20-15, but back-to-back threes from junior guard Bryce Brunz pushed it back to double digits by the 9:03 mark.
It went back-and-forth for the next four minutes until the Mules went on another run to get that margin to as many as 18 with a little over three minutes left. Ryan Harris had a steal and a fast break lay-in during the rally, and it capped a big first half for him with 10 points. The Mules went into the intermission with a 42-26 advantage.
UCM shot 56.3 percent in the stanza, while holding PSU to no threes and a 42.9 percent clip. The Mules also forced the Gorillas into eight turnovers and had an 18-14 rebound edge. Watts led UCM with 12 to go with Harris' 10. Leading scorer Spencer Magana led PSU with nine.
The Mules led by 15 with 12:29 left in the final half, but a 10-0 rally sparked by five points from senior guard Alex Moosmann gave them their largest lead of the game. The Gorillas would get no closer than 18 the rest of the way.
Central Missouri shot a blistering 60 percent in the period and held PSU to 41.7 percent. The Mules made it 58.1 percent for the game, including 8-of-16 from three-point land, while holding the Gorillas to a 0-of-5 clip from three-point land. The Gorillas also committed 15 turnovers to the Mules' eight.
Watts tallied another double-double with a game-high 24 points and 10 boards. Harris put up 18 points, while Moosmann and Brunz each had 13 in the game. Moosmann also had seven assists and only one turnover in the contest.
Series Notes with Central Missouri . . .
Saturday's meeting will be the 86th between these two teams and UCM leads the all-time series 44-41 after sweeping the regular season series last year while winning a second round MIAA Tournament game on March 7 in overtime. The Ichabods are 4-1 against Central Missouri in the MIAA Tournament, including 1-1 as the No. 6 seed. The Mules have won the last three in the series (all from the 2008-09 season). Washburn is 16-6 against UCM in Lee Arena and 19-15 in MIAA games.
Last meeting with Central Missouri . . .
(March. 7, 2009) -- KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Washburn rallied from an early 15-point deficit to take the lead, but couldn't hold on as they were eliminated from the MIAA Tournament by second-seeded Central Missouri 72-69 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium. The Ichabods led by four with under a minute to play, but UCM rallied to force overtime and then outscored Washburn 14-11 in the extra period for the win.
The Ichabods (16-13) trailed 43-34 with 14:27 to play in the game, but a 15-0 run, highlighted by seven points from Covier Carter gave Washburn a 49-43 lead with five and half minutes remaining in the game. UCM (24-4) cut the lead to a pair, but a trey from Paul Byers pushed the lead back to five with 2:34 to play. A 5-0 run by the Mules tied the game at 54 with 2:19 left in the game, but Lekheythan Malone nailed a three and James Williams made one of two foul shots to give the 'Bods a 58-54 lead with 40 seconds on the clock. Washburn was whistled for a foul on a three-point attempt and De'Andre Byrd hit three FTs to cut the lead to one with 23 ticks on the clock. Byrd hit the front end of a one-and-one with six seconds left to tie the game and his jumper at the buzzer rimmed out.
Washburn led 63-62 with 2:21 to play in the extra period, but an 8-0 run by Central Missouri gave the Mules a 70-63 lead with just 16 seconds remaining and UCM iced the game from the foul line. Central Missouri was 8-of-13 from the foul line in overtime, while the Ichabods were 3-of-4 from the charity stripe.
In the first half, the Mules used a 26-11 run to open a 15-point lead after the game had been tied at five. The Ichabods, however, closed the half on a 12-4 run to close to within seven at 35-28 at the intermission.
James Williams scored nine of his team-high 14 points in the first half. He fouled out with six seconds left in regulation. DeAndre Eggins had 13 points before he fouled out in overtime. Byers recorded his first double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Malone and Carter had 10 points each.
Byrd led Central Missouri with 19 points and 11 boards. Joe Young added 15 off the bench and Alex Moosmann and Sanijay Watts chipped in 10 each.

The last time the Ichabods took on a No. 1 ranked team was during the 2003-04 season on Jan. 14, 2004 when the Ichabods, then ranked No. 13 in the nation, topped Northwest Missouri 72-63 in Maryville to improve to 13-0 on the season. The Bearcats entered the game a perfect 13-0 record and were named the No. 1 team in the land less than 24 hours before the game. The win snapped the Bearcats' 26-game homecourt winning streak which was the second longest in the nation at the time. Troy Douglas led the Ichabods with 17 points as Washburn raced out to a 41-34 halftime lead.
Ichabod Basketball History . . .
Washburn is 1,367-954 (.682 in 2,321 games) in its 104th season of intercollegiate action. The Ichabods are the ninth-winningest team in NCAA Division II history and the 26th winningest team this decade. The Ichabods are 428-186 since joining the NCAA Division II ranks, which is the most since the 1989-90 season in the MIAA.
Ichabods In Lee Arena . . .
The Ichabods are 336-60 (.848) all-time in Lee Arena - the 26th season of play. The Ichabods recorded a school-best 28-game winning streak from Nov. 19, 1993 to Feb. 8, 1995 in Lee Arena.
