Ichabods bucket and the buzzer comes too late in 2-point loss at No. 5 SBU

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- For the second straight game, the Washburn Ichabods pushed a top 10 opponent on their home court with a second half rally, but came up short as they fell 86-84 to No. 5 Southwest Baptist. Washburn (13-11, 9-8 MIAA) will return home to face Missouri Southern on Thursday, Feb. 11 in Lee Arena with a 7:30 p.m. start.

In the second half, Washburn pulled with six with 12:33 to play at 62-56, but a 3-pointer and a transition lay up by the Bearcats stretched the lead back to 11 with 11:18 to play. Washburn pulled within five at 67-62 with 9:37 to play.

Nate Daniels nailed a 3-pointer to cut the score to 67-65, but SBU hit one of their own stretching the lead back to five with 8:11 left. Following a pair of free throws by Daniels and a lay up by Eggins, Washburn trailed by four with 6:36 to play. Washburn's Paul Byers hit a 3-pointer from about 26 feet to bring the Ichabods to 73-72 with 5:47 to go. Byers hit another on the Ichabods' next possession from the corner with 4:49 to play giving Washburn its first lead of the game at 75-73 with 4:45 to go following an SBU timeout.

After a lay up by Washburn's Byers, SBU responded with a 3-pointer by Matt Rogers knotting the score at 77-all with 3:48 to play in the game.

A lay up by James Williams gave Washburn a 79-77 lead with 3:35 to go and Tomas Brock hit one of two free throws with 3:30 to go pulling SBU within one.After a Washburn missed jumper on offense, D'Ante Harris hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key putting SBU up 81-79 with 2:59 to play in the game. Harris would hit another 3-pointer putting the Bearcats up by five, but with 1:05 to go, Darnell Kimble scored his 17th point of the game on a lay up pulling Washburn back to within three at 84-81.

Washburn forced a shot clock violation and took possession with 28.9 second s to go. Daniels' lay up with 19 seconds to play putting the Ichabods down one at 84-83. Nick Kovacevich was fouled and went to the line. After connecting on the first attempt with 13.5 seconds remaining, he hit both putting SBU up three at 86-83.

Eggins was fouled on a two-point attempt with 5.5 just behind the arc fouling out Matt Rogers. Eggins hit the first and after intentionally missing the second, WU regained the possession with 2.5 seconds left. Eggins 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed and Lekehthan Malone's follow-up dunk was just after the buzzer.

The Ichabods trailed 49-38 at the break as Brandon Clemons hit his second of two 3-pointers in the the first half. Washburn was 11 of 30 from the field hitting 37 percent while the Bearcats hit 14 of 33. The Ichabods hit 12 of 14 free throw attempts and DeAndre Eggins led the Ichabods with eight points in the frame.

Eggins led the Ichabods with 18 points and Byers finished with 17 coming off the bench hitting 7 of 10 from the field. Daniels finished with 13 points including three 3-pointers.

Kovacevich led five Bearcats in doublefigures with 17 points.

Washburn was 28 of 64 for the game and 17 of 34 in the second half. The Bearcats finished 27 of 53 while going 13 of 20 in the second half and 6 of 13 from 3-point range.
