TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn's starting pitcher
Curtis Hamilton needed only 79 pitches holding Bemidji State to one hit in a complete game shutout as the Ichabods blanked BSU 5-0 winning the series three games to one. Washburn (3-3) will be back in action at Falley Field at 3 p.m. on Tuesday when they play host to Rockhurst in a single nine inning game.
Neither team scored through the first 5 1/2 innings of the game until
Calvin Iversen doubled to right and then scored on a double to left center by
Travis Ice. In the seventh, the Ichabods'
Brett Sorensen hit his first home run of the season on a shot to right field. WIth two outs, the Ichabods took advantage of back-to-back throwing errors by the Beavers' third basemen scoring two more runs pulling away to a 3-0 lead.
The Ichabods added two more in the eighth as
Wes Joy tripled to left and scored on a ground out by Vicente Vieyra and Ice scored on a single by Sorensen to left. Bemidji State went down in order in the ninth wrapping up the series for the Ichabods.
Hamilton, in allowing only one hit, lowered his ERA this season to 0.69 and threw strikes on 56 of his 79 pitches. Sorensen finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBI to lead the Ichabod hitting attack.
