TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 13 Washburn Lady Blues wrapped up the regular season with an 87-74 win over the No. 5 ranked Emporia State Lady Hornets in Lee Arena to complete a 23-4 regular season. The Lady Blues still have a shot at a share of the MIAA regular season title with ESU should Fort Hays State defeat the Lady Hornets on Saturday in Emporia.
The Lady Blues led 43-36 at the break behind 20 first half points from
Stanecia Graham who hit 7 of her 14 attempts from the field. Washburn led by as many as 12 in the opening stanza at 41-29 with 2:09 remaining before ESU finished the half on a 7-2 run cutting the lead to seven.
In the second half, ESU trimmed the lead to as few as three at 71-68 on a 3-pointer by Cassondra Boston with 4:35 to play, but on the next Washburn possession, Graham hit a lay up pushing the lead back to five sparking an 11-2 run over the next three-plus minutes stretching the lead to as many as 15 on two different occasions before nailing down the 13-point win.
Graham led Washburn with 28 points following up her career-high of 31 at Pittsburg State on Saturday. She was 11 of 23 from the field recording a double double with a game-high 12 rebounds - all in 21 minutes of play.
Janice Bright scored 19 with a career high nine rebounds.
Jessica Mainz had 12 with six assists, two blocks going 8 of 8 from the free throw line in the win.
Sophia Lenard led Emporia State with 26 points on 9 of 16 shooting from the field. Ida Edwards had 16 points and eight rebounds.
Washburn finished 29 of 62 from the field hitting 47 percent of their shots. Emporia State was 27 of 66 for 41 percent shooting. The Lady Blues were 25 of 28 from the free throw line and out rebounded ESU 38 to 33. Washburn also committed only eight turnovers. ESU coughed the ball up 13 times leading to 17 points off turnovers for the Lady Blues.
