SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Washburn Lady Blues opened the 2009 season with a 1-0 loss to No. 21 Angelo State and a 5-3 setback against Midwestern State on the first day of the St. Mary's Classic. Washburn will be back in action on Friday when they face Abilene Christian at 3:45 p.m. and Tarleton State at 6 p.m.

Angelo State scored a run in the bottom of the first inning off a lead off walk as the Lady Blues'
Kayla Long allowed just two hits in six innings of work in the Washburn season-opener. Long allowed a hit in the second inning and a double in the third before retiring the final 10 batters in the game. Washburn out hit the Rambelles 5 to 2 in the game led by
Maggie West's two hits, including a double.
Jessie Batres and Lindsey Himel picked up the other hits for Washburn.

The Midwestern State Mustangs took advantage of three unearned runs en route to a 5-3 win over the Lady Blues. All five runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning after Washburn jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings. All three runs were driven in by
Dani White's first home run of the season and her 32nd of her career.
