TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabods erupted for five runs in the second inning, but couldn't hold on as they fell 10-8 to 29th-ranked Wayne State (Neb.) on Wednesday afternoon at Falley Field. Washburn led 5-1 after two, but the Wildcats rallied and took the lead for good with a four-run sixth inning.
Wayne State (13-5) took the lead with a single run in the top of the second, but the Ichabods (12-10) answered with five runs in the bottom half. Luis Beltran Lopez had an RBI double to get things rolling.
Cameron Kasel had an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch.
Wes Joy polished off the inning with a two-run single.
The Wildcats battled back with three runs in the third and a single run in the fourth to tie the game before taking the lead for good in the sixth. A grand slam by Joe Wendte gave WSC a 9-5 lead they would never relinquish. Washburn cut the lead in half with two runs in the bottom half. Thomas Holiday added an RBI double.
The Ichabods pulled to within one at 9-8 with a single run in the seventh, but Wayne State answered in the eighth with a run of their own for the 10-8 final.
Brian Gorges, Holiday, Joy and Kasel all had two hits apiece, while Joy and Kasel each knocked in a pair.
Dustin Holthaus made his first start of the season going 3.1 innings allowing five runs on five hits, but settled for a no decision.
Daren Parker (0-1) pitched two innings in relief, allowing three runs and was tagged with the loss.
Sam Rathbun (1-0) pitched four scoreless innings in relief to earn his first win of the season, while Tyler Gutierrez pitched three solid innings to earn the save.
