HAYS, Kan. -- The Ichabods dropped a pair of MIAA games to third-ranked Emporia State on Monday in Hays, Kan. ESU took game one 10-1 in seven-innings before rallying for a 9-8 win in game two. The games were relocated to Hays due to the winter weather that moved through over the weekend causing unplayable field conditions.

The Hornets (25-5, 14-2 MIAA) took game one 10-1. ESU led 1-0 through three innings thanks to a first-inning run. The Hornets then exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-0 lead. ESU had six hits in the inning and were aided by one error from Washburn. The Ichabods (12-12, 6-6 MIAA) were only able to muster two hits and scored one run in the top of the seventh for the final.

Curtis Hamilton (3-1) was roughed up, allowing 10 runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings and suffered his first loss of the season for Wasburn. Ryan Anthony improved to 6-0 for the Hornets giving up one hit in six innings of work, while striking out eight.

Emporia State jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage in game two with single runs in the first and second innings. Washburn responded with three runs in the bottom of the second on a home run from Brian Gorges to take the lead. The Hornets regained the lead at 5-3 with three runs in the top of the third, but the Ichabods came right back to tie the game with two runs in the bottom half on a two-run double from Dane Simoneau.

ESU led 6-5 in the fifth, but Thomas Holiday smacked a two-run home run to give Washburn a 7-6 lead. The Ichabods added a single run in the seventh on an RBI-triple from Simoneau to extend the lead to 8-6. The Hornets rallied, however, to take the lead for good in the eighth. Back-to-back homers to lead off the inning tied the game at eight and an unearned run later in the frame gave ESU a 9-8 lead.

Dustin Holthaus (0-2) tossed four-innings in relief of Danny Cook, but was tagged with the loss. Dominic King (3-0) pitched a perfect inning in relief for the Hornets and got the win. Diego Soto tossed two scoreless innings to earn his sixth save of the season.
