SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods evened their early season record at 5-5 with a 14-4 win over Bemidji State on Friday afternoon in the Drury Invitational. The Ichabods broke open a close game with seven runs in the top of the ninth inning.
Washburn plated one run in the top of the first when
Thomas Holiday singled in
Travis Ice. Bemidji State plated single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-1 lead. The Ichabods scored twice in the top half of the third to regain the lead at 3-2. Holiday had an RBI single and
Dane Simoneau added a sacrifice fly.
Single runs in the third and fourth innings gave the Beavers the lead once again at 4-3. The 'Bods took the lead for good with four runs in the top of the fifth on a grand slam by Simoneau. The lead was 7-4 when Washburn broke the game wide open with seven runs in the top of the ninth. Luis Lopez drove in the first run with an RBI single.
Calvin Iversen had a two-run single to make the score 10-4. Ice had a run-scoring single and
Wes Joy cleared the bases with a three-run home run to make it 14-4.
Joel Ricketts (2-1) allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings to earn his second win of the season. He also struck out six.
Dustin Holthaus struck out six in four innings of work to earn his first save of the season.
Simoneau finished the game 1-for-4 with 5 RBI, while Ice and Sorensen added three hits apiece.
