Lady Blues softball team sweeps Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team picked up their first MIAA sweep of the season after four consecutive splits while topping Missouri Southern in a pair of games taking game 1 5-2 while winning the second game 6-3. Washburn (19-24, 6-6 MIAA) will be back in action on April 17 when they play host to Southwest Baptist with Central Missouri coming to town the following day for a pair of doubleheaders. Lisa Carey also became Washburn's all-time winningest coach in the second game winning her 210th on the Lady Blues bench passing Kim Newbern who recorded 209 wins.

Game 1 - Washburn 5, Missouri Southern 2

Washburn jumped out to a 4-0 lead holding on for a 5-2 win over the Lions. Lady Blues starter Samantha Farris held the Lions hitless until the the sixth inning. Washburn scored a solo run in the second inning on a fielding error by the Lions. In the third inning, Washburn scored three runs with Lindsay Moore having the big hit - a two-run double scoring Ashley Podschun and Dani White. Maggie West drove in the other Washburn run on a double to left scoring Moore. Washburn's final run came in the top of the seventh on a home run by Dani White - her 10th of the season. Farris picked up the win scattering three hits allowing no earned runs with 11 strikeouts. The 11 strikeouts, with six called punchouts, were the most by a Lady Blues pitcher since Katie Gregg struck out 11 Emporia State batters on March 25, 2003.


Game 2 - Washburn 6, Missouri Southern 3
Farris (10-12) won her second game of the afternoon with a five strikeout performance while allowing one earned run in the 6-3 win over the Lions. Washburn scored five in their first at bat and added another in the third inning. Moore had two doubles and drove in three of the Lady Blues' runs. Whitney Tapp added a pair of RBI.
