TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn doubleheader with Southwest Baptist saw a lot of action as a Lady Blues' single-season record was broken, a pitcher's duel in the nightcap, confusion in the batter's box as the two teams split the twinbill with the Bearcats winning the opener 4-3 and the Lady Blues scoring the winning run in their final at bat in a 1-0 victory in the second game. Washburn (20-25, 7-7 MIAA) will be in action on Saturday against Central Missouri at 1 p.m.

Game 1 - Southwest Baptist 4, Washburn 3

The Bearcats topped Washburn for the first time since April 21, 2001 in a 4-3 win. The win snapped an 18-game winning streak by the Lady Blues over Southwest Baptist. Washburn got on the board first as Tish Williams hit her 16th home run of the season, tying her own single-season Washburn record. The Bearcats knotted the score in the third inning on sac fly by Taressa Gomez scoring Krysta Baderdeen.

SBU scored three of their runs in what would be a wild sixth inning for the two teams. After SBU scored three runs in the top half of the inning with RBI by Sarah Brison, Thelmeca Chambers and Krysta Baderdeen, Washburn came to bat in the bottom of the inning trailing 4-3. TIsh Williams led off the inning, but she was not the scheduled batter as Maggie West was slated to bat for the Lady Blues. Williams flew out to deep center and then Lindsey Himpel grounded out to shortstop. After a strike to Dani White, SBU coach Christy Capner notified the umpires Washburn was batting out of order, but since the appeal was not made at the first batter of the inning who batted in the inning, play continued from that point in the Washburn line up. White then doubled to right center and Ashley Podschun walked, but Lindsey Moore was retired striking out swinging stranding both runners. In the seventh inning, the Lady Blues Whitney Tapp singled with one out, but Washburn could not push the tying run across falling 4-3.

Tapp and White each had two hits for the Lady Blues. Samantha Farris (10-13) took the loss in the circle.

Game 2 - Washburn 1, Southwest Baptist 0
The second game featured a pitcher's duel as Washburn's Kayla Long and Southwest Baptist's Josie Rose kept their opponents line up in check as neither team recorded a hit until SBU's McKenzie Mortimer recorded the first hit of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Washburn did not record its first hit until the top of the seventh inning when Podschun blooped a single over the first baseman's head. Lindsey Moore's sac bunt in Washburn's next at bat was fielded by Rose, but her throw to first sailed into right field sending Podschun to third base and Moore to second. West popped out to first base to bring Tapp, who singled to left with two outs to end the game with Podschun scoring the winning run.

Long (7-10) picked up the complete game shutout scattering two hits and striking out five. Rose (12-16) was saddled with the loss striking out five allowing the unearned run.

The win in the second game was the 211th on the Lady Blues bench for head coach Lisa Carey since taking over the program from Kim Newbern who coached from 1997 to 2002. Newbern was 209-111 at Washburn. Carey is 211-159 in her seventh season at Washburn with her moving into the top spot on the Washburn coaching chart with the Lady Blues' second win at Missouri Southern on April 11 in a 6-3 win.
