TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues were swept in a doubleheader by Central Missouri falling in the first game 5-1 while dropping the nightcap 9-3. Washburn (20-27, 7-9 MIAA) will be in action on Wednesday against Emporia State at the Washburn Softball Complex. Monday's non-conference doubleheader with Missouri Western has been moved to April 28.
Game 1 -- Central Missouri 5, Washburn 1
Tish Williams tied a record, broke a record and snapped a record with one swing of the bat in the opening game of a doubleheader with Central Missouri as she hit an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence giving the Lady Blues a 1-0 lead. The home run broke her own single season home run mark with her 17th of the season and it was 52nd run scored of the season tying Kristen Cheney from 2002. The home run snapped Central Missouri's Megan Leonard's streak of consecutive shutout inning streak at 83 2/3 innings, which was tied for the longest in NCAA Divison II history. Central Missouri tied the score in the next inning on a Nicole Norberg single scoring Cat White. The Jennies broke open a 1-1 tie with three runs in the sixth capped by a 2 RBI double by Kasey Martin. The Jennies added a run in the seventh wrapping up the 5-1 win.
Kayla Long (7-11) took the loss striking out two allowing the five earned runs. For the Jennies, Leonard (16-1) struck out 10 batters with one walk allowing the lone run on the homer by Williams in the first inning.
Game 2 -- Central Missouri 9, Washburn 3
The Lady Blues were held scoreless for 6 and 2/3 innings as UCM starter Kelly Martin held Washburn in check scattering nine hits in the game. Washburn got on the board after
Marissa Martin singled to left with two outs and moved to second on a single by Williams.
Lindsey Himpel tripled to right field scoring both Williams and Martin.
Dani White singled to left scoring Himpel, but Washburn's
Ashley Podschun fouled out to end the game and the comeback attempt by the Lady Blues.
The Jennies recorded four earned runs off of Washburn starter
Samantha Farris (10-14) in three innings.
Megan Kimerer came in the game in relief and allowed five earned runs.
Himpel and White each had two hits for Washburn. Krista Cummings had 4 RBI with a three-run homer and a sac fly going 1 for 1 officially.
Washburn stranded seven base runners in the game.
