Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team will wrap up its six-match road trip to begin the season as they will take on Truman State at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17 and then travel to St. Joseph, Mo., to face Missouri Western. The Lady Blues enter the Bulldog match with a 2-2-0 overall record and a 0-1-0 mark after dropping their conference opener 3-1 at Central Missouri. Following the game with the Griffons, the Lady Blues will face Central Missouri again for the second time in two weeks when they will open Yager Stadium at 6 p.m. on Sept. 24 before facing Southwest Baptist at 6 p.m. on Sept. 26.
Match Five | Truman State Bulldogs
Team notes: The Bulldogs are 2-2-2 this season entering Thursday's match with Washburn. They are coming off a 4-1 loss at Nebraska-Omaha.
About the coach: Mike Cannon who enters his 17th season as the Bulldogs head women's soccer coach. With a career record of 218-78-29 (.717), Cannon is the winningest coach in Truman women's soccer history and was ranked ninth in victories among all-time Division II coaches entering the 2008 fall season. Cannon has led the Bulldogs to a 95-15-12 record all-time in MIAA play.
Series history with the Bulldogs: The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 10-3-1 and have won the last four meetings. Truman has outscored the Lady Blues 28 to 12 in the 14 meetings. Washburn is 1-4-1 in matches played in Kirksville. The Bulldogs ended the Lady Blues' season last year with a 1-0 win in the second round of the NCAA regionals in Canyon, Texas.
About the Bulldogs: Katie Reuck and Olivia Hayes have each scored two goals this season to pace the Bulldog attack. Reuck has added an assist and Isabel Gaeta leads the Bulldogs with two assists along with Kelsey Twellman. In net, Jayne Grishman has a 1.23 goal against average with 27 saves and a save percentage of .771.
Last meeting with the Bulldogs: (Nov. 16, 2008) CANYON, Texas -- The Washburn Lady Blues season came to an end with a 1-0 loss to Truman in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs. Washburn wraps up the season tying the school record with wins in a season with 15 going 15-7-2 on the season.
Truman scored the first and only goal of the match when Megan Buri hit Brigitte Pohren 10:35 into the first half giving the Bulldogs all the offense needed for the win. Both teams had four shots in the first half and the Lady Blues were outshot the Bulldogs 5 to 3 in the second half.
Jessica Mainz had two shots, which were both on goal and
Traci Nigg had three shots with one coming on goal.
Ashley Klone had two saves in goal for the Lady Blues.
Last time out for Truman: (Sept. 12, 2009) OMAHA, Neb. -- Freshman Olivia Hayes put in her second goal of the season for the Truman women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon, but the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks scored twice in each half to hold home field against the Bulldogs, 4-1, in Omaha, Nebraska. Hayes' goal came just before halftime for the 'Dogs, who fell to 2-2-2 (1-1 MIAA) on the season. The goal cut UNO's lead to just 2-1 at the break, but a pair of second half goals did in the Bulldogs in what was overall an even contest with 15 shots apiece.
Match Six | Missouri Western Griffons
Team notes: The Griffons are 2-4-0 this season and 0-2-0 in MIAA play entering Thursday's home match against Emporia State.
About the coach: Jeff Hansen is 9-49-6 in his fourth year as the Griffons' head coach. Hansen came to Missouri Western after a two-year stint at Central Missouri State as the assistant women's soccer coach. Hansen also has previous collegiate coaching experience at Missouri Southern State University where he was a student-athlete.
Series history with the Griffons: The Lady Blues lead the all-time series 7-1-0 and have outscored the Griffons 29-1 in the seven wins. Missouri Western's only win in the series was in the very first meeting when the Griffons won 2-1 on Sept. 28, 2005 for the very first win in the program's history. Washburn is 3-1-0 in St. Joseph and the Lady Blues have held the Griffons scoreless in the last three matches.
About the Griffons: Jessica Martin leads the Griffons in scoring with four goals and one assist for nine points. Audrey Henderson has scored two goals along with Abby Widrig, who has also has dished out a team-high three assists.
Last meeting with the Griffons: (Nov. 8, 2008) ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues wrapped up the regular season with a 2-0 win over Missouri Western. The Lady Blues improved to 14-6-2 overall and 10-5-1 in the MIAA with over the Griffons. Washburn scored a goal in each half as
Traci Nigg scored her second goal of the season on a direct kick in the 26th minute of the match. Washburn added a second goal in the 48th minute when
Kaydi Hooker scored for the second time of her career on a rebounded shot from
Jessica Mainz giving Mainz her ninth assist of the season adding to her single-season assist record.
Ashley Klone picked up the shutout in net for the Lady Blues picking up two saves.
Washburn outshot the Griffons 13 to 5 in the match and had a 7 to 4 advantage in corner kicks. The match was also the 85th career start for Mainz, Hooker and
Lisa Fahey, which tied the MIAA record for most career starts and matches played.
Last time out for the Griffons: (Sept. 12, 2009) The Missouri Western Griffons soccer team gave up two second half goals against the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats, falling 3-1 in Maryville, Mo. The Griffons fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA. Jessica Martin scored the Griffons only goal of the game and her fourth of the season. Northwest jumped on top of the Griffons in the sixth minute of the game when Sara Meidlinger scored her second goal of the season off a Heidi Sobota assist. The Griffons scored the tying goal at the 31:53 mark of the first half when Martin blasted one past Bearcat goalkeeper Kira Lazenby. Abby Widrig and Audrey Henderson picked up the assists for the Griffons.
In the second half the Bearcats scored in the 53rd and 57th minute to take the two goal lead. Sobota and Andrea Tritz each scored their second goal of the season. With the victory the Bearcats are now 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. The Bearcats took 19 shots to the Griffons 13 and had three corner kicks to Western's two. Jenna Weis picked up the loss for Western as she made eight saves falling to 0-3 on the season.

Sept. 12, 2009 - WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team fell 3-1 in their MIAA opener at Central Missouri dropping them to 2-2 on the season. After the Jennies (3-2-1, 2-0-0) scored 3:07 into the match as Melanie Hall scored her second goal of the season. The Lady Blues responded at the 8:00 mark of the match as
Lauren Henry scored her first goal of the season on an assist from
Angela Wiseman as both teams entered the half knotted 1-1. The Jennies scored 1:40 into the second half and added another goal in the 85th minute leading to the 3-1 win. The Jennies outshot the Lady Blues 14 to 11.
Ashley Klone had three saves in goal for Washburn.

Washburn is 62-45-21 (.560) all-time in its seventh season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 40-32-16 (.537). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 27-16-9 and they are 28-24-9 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-5-3.
