TOPEKA, Kan. -- The sixth-ranked Washburn Lady Blues volleyball team won their 2009 home-opener 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 23-25, 25-21) over 19th-ranked Truman State in a battle of ranked teams. With the win Washburn improved to 14-0, 2-0 in the MIAA and tied the school record for the most wins to start a season (2004). The Lady Blues will go for the record Saturday afternoon against Missouri Western at Lee Arena at 2 p.m.
Washburn won a back-and-forth set one that saw six ties and two lead changes by a 25-23 score. The Lady Blues cruised to a 25-16 set two win to go up 2-0. Truman State held the lead for the majority of set three before a furious rally by the home squad. The Bulldogs (9-5, 0-2 MIAA) led 23-17, but WU scored five straight points to make it 23-22. Truman eventually held off the rally and forced a fourth set with the 25-23 win.
Truman led set four 17-13, but the Lady Blues won 12 of the final 16 points to take the set and the match.
Sophomore middle hitter
Mollie Lacy led WU in kills with 14. Freshman outside hitter
Hillary Hughes recorded her first career double-double with career-highs of 11 kills and 14 digs, freshman middle hitter
Jessica Fey had a career-high 11 kills and sophomore rightside hitter
Breanna Lewis chipped in 10.
Senior setter
Kate Hampson dished out 46 assists on the night, while three Lady Blues finished with double-digit digs. Junior libero
