Match Three | Newman Jets
Team notes: The Jets are 1-1 this season and return six starters off of last season's 7-10-2 squad which finished the Heartland Conference schedule 4-8-0 for a sixth place finish. They are returning 11 letterwinners off the team. This season, the Jets have three players who have all scored one goal in Amanda Knabe, Lauren Wilson and Lacey Alost. Knabe has also added a solo assist.
About the coach: Head Coach Derek Nichols is his fourth season with the Jets and his fifth overall of head coaching. He has a 26-25-6 at Newman and 31-51-6 overall.
Series history with the Jets: The match will be the first meeting between the two schools
About the Jets: After a disappointing 7-10-2 finish to the 2008 season, and a sixth-placed finish in the Heartland Conference, the Newman women's soccer team is ready to right the ship in the 2009 season.
Nichols will be working with a 50-50 mix of newcomers and returners. Eleven players from the 2008 squad return for the 2009 season, while 11 players on this season's roster are new to the program.
Three Second Team All-Heartland Conference players will lead the charge through the 2009 season.
Juniors Amanda Knabe and Heather Baloga will be looked to as leaders this season. Knabe netted a team-high 10 goals and added three assists as a sophomore in 2008, while Baloga finished with three assists in her sophomore season.
Sophomore Lauren Benning added All-Region honors to her resume after scoring two goals and five assists in her freshman season for the Jets.
Derby native Ali Schreiber is one of two Jets who have transferred to Newman for the 2009 season. Schreiber played at Southwest Baptist University last season where she played in 16 games as a freshman and was named “SBU Woman of the Month” at the school's homecoming match.
With his team assembled, Nichols and the Jets will face a challenging non-conference schedule that he hopes will prepare his team for a run through the Heartland Conference.
Nichols hopes to provide fans with an exciting on-field product.
