Lady Blues soccer team to have 1st home matches of the season this week

Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues will finally have their first home match of the season when they will play host to Central Missouri at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24 in Yager Stadium. It will be the second meeting between the two teams in 12 days as the Jennies took the first meeting on Sept. 12 by a 3-1 score. The Lady Blues will then take on Southwest Baptist on Sept. 26 in Yager Stadium following the Ichabod football game with Central Missouri at 6 p.m. Washburn is looking to avoid its first four-match losing streak since the 2004 campaign in the program's second year of existence.

Match Seven | Central Missouri Jennies
Team notes: The Jennies are 3-3-1 and 2-1-0 in conference play this season. The Jennies have lost their last match 2-0 at Nebraska-Omaha.

About the coach: Lewis Theobald is in his third season at the helm of the Jennies soccer program. He led the Jens to back-to-back conference titles and has posted a 28-9-6 overall mark. He was the first assistant at Division I Indiana State where he was the lead recruiter before coming to UCM. He is a 1999 graduate of the University of Kansas.

About the Jennies: Melanie Hall, a Topeka native and Washburn Rural High School product, leads the team with seven points with three goals and one assist. She has attempted a team-high 31 shots with 19 on goal. In net for the Jennies is Lauren Bamvakais who has a 0.83 goal against average with 29 saves. She has allowed six goals in 650 minutes of action.

Series history with the Jennies:  The Jennies lead the all-time series 8-4-1 and have won the last three in a row. They have outscored the Lady Blues 16 to 11 in the 13 meetings. Five of the last six matches have been decided by 1-0 scores and seven of the last eight matches have been decided by one goal. Three of the matches have gone into overtime and one has gone into double overtime.

Last meeting with the Jennies: (Sept. 12, 2009) -- WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team fell 3-1 in their MIAA opener at Central Missouri dropping them to 2-2 on the season. After the Jennies (3-2-1, 2-0-0) scored 3:07 into the match as Melanie Hall scored her second goal of the season.The Lady Blues responded at the 8:00 mark of the match as Lauren Henry scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Angela Wiseman as both teams entered the half knotted 1-1.
The Jennies scored 1:40 into the second half and added another goal in the 85th minute leading to the 3-1 win. The Jennies outshot the Lady Blues 14 to 11. Ashley Klone had three saves in goal for Washburn.

Last time out for Central Missouri: (Sept. 17, 2009) The Central Missouri Jennies soccer team came into play Thursday with a three-game win streak on the line and in hopes of taking a second game against Nebraska-Omaha in the programs history. UNO has dominated the Jennies as the Mavericks took the game 2-0 and handed UCM its first conference loss of the season. The game remained tied at zero going into halftime, as the UNO came out in the second half and scored the game-winning goal in the 46th minute. Danielle Archuleta scored her first goal of the season and Jerica Kuncl added the security goal for the Mavericks in the 80th minute.
Melanie Hall recorded four shots in the game as Angela Dobbie and Sharaya Sidebottom both were credited with two. Kayla Shain, Kelsie Hanson, Kayla Jupp and Katie Ruhman all had one shot.
The Jennies outshot UNO in the second half 8-6 as the Mavericks totaled 13 shots to UCM's 12. Lauren Bamvakais recorded a season high nine saves today as she was credited with the loss.
Match Eight | Southwest Baptist
Team notes: The Bearcats are 4-1-1 and 2-1-0 in the MIAA entering Thursday's match at Emporia State.  The Bearcats' lone loss on the season came in their last match at Northwest Missouri falling to the green Bearcats 2-1 on Sept. 19.

About the coach: First-year coach Rob Podeyn is 4-1-1 in his first season at Southwest Baptist.

About the Bearcats: SBU lost their match 2-1 at Northwest Missouri on Sept. 19. They will take on Emporia State this Thursday before taking on Washburn on Saturday. SBU has outscored their opponents 13 to 8 this season and has 11 assists on the 13 goals. Shannon Roher and Jaymye Ross leads the team with three goals apiece. Ross also has three assists, as does Taylor Vick. Roher has placed 13 of her 24 shot attempts on goal. Megan Link has allowed six goals in 465 minutes of action with 17 saves and a save percentage of .739 with two shutouts.

Series history with the Bearcats:  SBU leads the all-time series 5-3-4. After dropping the first four games in the series between the schools, the Lady Blues have gone 3-1-4 in the last eight meetings against SBU. Five of the last six matches have gone into double overtime.

Last meeting with the Bearcats: (Oct. 25, 2008) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues outshot the Southwest Baptist Lady Bearcats 28 to 9, but finished with a 2-2 double overtime tie on Saturday night at Yager Stadium. With the tie, Washburn's record goes to 11-5-2 and 7-4-1 in the MIAA. It was the eighth-straight game the Lady Blues have gone without a defeat.
Southwest Baptist scored in the 11th minute when Nicola Cousins scored her 13th goal of the season on a free kick from the left corner from 17 yards out. Washburn's Lisa Fahey knotted the score in the 33rd minute when connected on a free kick of her own from 33 yards out. It was her second goal of the season.
Right before the break, SBU's Rhiane Mitchell scored her 14th goal of the season on an assist from Shannon Roher pushing the Lady Bearcats to a 2-1 lead.
Lauren Henry tied the score at 2-2 on her seventh goal of the season on an assist from Jessica Mainz. It was Mainz's 21st career assist putting her in third place by herself on the MIAA's career assist chart.
Neither team would score the remainder of the game sending it into overtime. In the first overtime, Washburn outshot the Lady Bearcats 2 to 1 and held the same margin in the second overtime, but could not get the winning score.
Ashley Klone played all 110 minutes in goal for the Lady Blues as she collected three saves.
In a physical match, the teams combined for 37 fouls with SBU collecting 21 whistles. SBU was also flagged for two yellow cards.

Last time out for the Bearcats: (Sept. 19, 2009) MARYVILLE, Mo. -- SBU soccer was given their first loss of the season by the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri, 2-1. The green Bearcats struck first, in the 11th minute, as Andrea Tritz put one past goalkeeper Megan Link to go up 1-0. The rest of the first half went scoreless, and Northwest held an edge on shots over SBU, 7-6.
The 'Cats tied the match up early in the second half, as Shannon Roher connected on a pass from Callie Beard and Jen Tenholder, putting the match into a 1-1 draw. The goal was Roher's second in as many games. The tie would not last, unfortunately, as Northwest's Tritz put in her second goal of the match in the 78th minute. SBU had chances, as they outshot the green Bearcats, 6-4 in the second half, and 12-11 over the whole game.
Last time out for the Lady Blues:
Sept. 19, 2009 - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues' seven-match winning streak over Missouri Western on the soccer pitch came to an end with a 3-0 loss to the Griffons. The Lady Blues outshot the Griffons 19 to 11 including 14 to 5 in the second half, but could not get any attempts past MWSU goalkeeper Joyce Endicott who finished with six saves. Ashley Taylor, Brandy Hirsch and Kyleigh Olmstead all had three shot attempts to pace the Lady Blues attack. Anny Widrigh had two goals for the Griffons and Jessica Martin added the third for Missouri Western.

Lady Blues Soccer History:
Washburn is 62-47-21 (.560) all-time in its seventh season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 40-34-16 (.537). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 27-16-9 and they are 28-26-9 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-5-3.

• The Lady Blues are 1-3-2 in their MIAA home openers with the lone win coming on Sept. 10 against Emporia State in a 2-1 win.

Following the weekend matches with Central Missouri and Southwest Baptist, the Lady Blues will continue the homestand with two more matches against with Missouri Southern on Oct. 3 and a non-conference clash against Rockhurst on Sept. 30. Washburn's next home match will be on Oct. 15 against Emporia State starting a three-match homestand as they will take on Northwest Missouri on Oct. 17 and Nebraska-Omaha on Oct. 22.
