Lady Blues soccer team back to action with Rockhurst and Missouri Southern

Match notes | Washburn live stats

Setting the Scene:
The Washburn Lady Blues will wrap up their four-game home stand as they will play host to Rockhurst on Wednesday and Missouri Southern on Saturday. Washburn has won their last two games topping Central Missouri 1-0 and Southwest Baptist 4-3. Following the match with the Lions, Washburn will travel to Northwest Missouri on Oct. 8 and then to Nebraska-Omaha on Oct. 11 before returning home to face Emporia State on Oct. 15.

Match Nine | Rockhurst Hawks
Team notes: The Hawks are 4-3-1 this season and have outscored their opponents 17 to 12. They are averaging 2.12 goals per match while allowing 1.50 per contest. The Hawks have beaten Emporia State 3-0 while losing to Missouri Southern 2-1. They tied their last match out 3-3 with Missouri-St. Louis on Sept. 27.

About the coach: Greg Herdlick is in his 11th season as the head coach of the Rockhurst women's soccer program. The Hawks have posted nine winning seasons under Herdlick, who has an overall record of 105-69-13 and is the third winningest coach in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a .598 winning percentage.

About the Hawks: Haley Long leads the Hawks with four goals and also has added an assist on the season for nine total points. Abby Davidson has three goals and one assist. In net Alyssa Miller has a 1.42 goals against average.

Series history with the Hawks:  The Hawks lead the all-time series 2-1-1. Washburn won 2-1 in overtime last season in the match played in Kansas City. Rockhurst has outscored the Lady Blues 7 to 6 in the four meetings.

Last meeting with the Hawks: (Oct. 1, 2008) -- KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Ashley Taylor's overtime goal 8:04 into overtime propelled Washburn to a 2-1 win in overtime over No. 23 ranked Rockhurst.
Taylor's second goal of the season came on an assist from Danielle Sicard as Taylor headed into the goal for the winner. The Lady Blues fell behind after a scoreless first half as Lisa Schwarz scored her eighth goal of the season in the 56th minute on an assist from Abby Davidson. The Lady Blues knotted the score on Jessica Mainz's fifth goal of the season from 18-yards out unassisted. Jenny Persons picked up the win in goal picking up one save while facing eight shots. The Lady Blues outshot the Hawks 16 to 8 including an 11 to 5 advantage in the second half.

Last time out for Rockhurst: (Sept. 27, 2009) Rockhurst rallied to force overtime before settling for a 3-3 tie with Missouri-St. Louis in Great Lakes Valley Conference action Sunday in St. Louis.
Both teams collected four shots in overtime. One of UMSL's shots hit the post in the second overtime period.
Christie Moreland's goal from 20 yards out in the 71st minute tied the score at 3-3 for Rockhurst.
Amy Lindley scored her second goal in two games to tie the score at 1-1 at the 22:17 mark and Morgan Boudreau evened the score at 2-2 with a goal at the 37:18 mark.
The Hawks outshot the Tritons, 26-23. Lindley and Erin Valenta led Rockhurst with five shots apiece. Taylor Stitt added four shots. Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Miller made eight saves.
Match Nine| Missouri Southern
Team notes: The Lions are 3-7-0 and 1-5 in the MIAA entering Thursday's match with Emporia State. They are allowing 2.20 goals per game while scoring 1.5 per contest. They have been outscored 23 to 12 this season.

About the coach: Trevor Wachsman is in his seventh year as head coach of the Missouri Southern women's soccer program. Formerly a two-year assistant at the University of Northern Colorado, he was named the second head coach in the history of the Lions on April 30, 2003. He is 55-54-19 as the Lions' head coach.

About the Lions: The Lions snapped a five-match losing streak after topping Missouri Western 2-1 in double overtime in Joplin on Sept. 26. Stephanie Heines leads the Lions in scoring with seven points on three goals and one assist. Randi Russell has started 10 matches in net and has a 2.01 goal against average with 46 saves. SHe has recorded one shutout on the season.

Series history with the Lions:  The all-time series is tied 4-4-5 with the Lions. Washburn has won the last two matches and the Lions have not recorded a win in the series in the last six meetings. The Lions' last win in the series was on Sept. 30, 2006 in a 1-0 overtime win in Joplin. Seven of the 13 matches have gone into overtime with five going into double overtime.

Last meeting with the Lions: (Nov. 6, 2008) JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues improved to 12-6-2 and 9-5-1 in MIAA with a 3-0 win over Missouri Southern. After a scoreless first half in which the Lady Blues outshot the Lions 11 to 6, Washburn pulled away with three second half goals dominating play outshooting Missouri Southern 10 to 2 while adding a 7 to 1 advantage in corner kicks.
Danielle Ayala scored the first Lady Blues goal on an assist from Jessica Mainz on a cross in the 56th minute of play. The goal was the ninth of the season for Ayala and the assist was the eighth for Mainz, which broke the Washburn single-season record.
Keely Lambeth scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Ayala in the 75th minute of play putting Washburn up 2-0.
Ashley Taylor wrapped up the scoring for the Lady Blues in the 87th minute on a direct kick. It was her sixth goal of the season.
Ashley Klone picked up the shutout win in net for the Lady Blues collecting four saves. It was her second shutout of the season.
Ayala and Mainz each had five shots and two shots on goal.

Last time out for the Lions: (Sept. 26, 2009) Joplin, Mo. -- In a rare match that featured two penalty kicks in the second half and overtime, Stephanie Heines put in the deciding penalty shot that gave the Missouri Southern Lions a 2-1 double-overtime win over the Missouri Western Griffons Saturday night (Sept. 26) at Fred Hughes Stadium. The match remained scoreless until the 82:21 mark, when the excitement began.
Danai Noftz broke the scoreless tie by connecting on an absolute blast from 20 yards away off a free kick by Shannon Kuhn. The Lions (3-7, 1-5 MIAA) held that lead for the next five minutes when the Griffons were awarded a penalty kick that Jessica Martin put in that tied the score with 2:12 left in regulation.
Heines then won it for the Lions with her own penalty kick at the 106:19 mark of the second overtime.
The match was close on all fronts, as the Lions held a 12-10 shots edge, including an 10-4 advantage in the second half and overtime periods. Randi Russell made two saves for the Lions, while Joyce Endicott stopped four shots for the Griffons (4-6, 2-4 MIAA).
Last time out for the Lady Blues:
Sept. 26, 2009 - TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn's Leah Talley recorded the fourth hat trick in school history including the match-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in the Lady Blues 4-3 win over Southwest Baptist. Washburn improves to 4-4-0 and 2-3-0 in the MIAA. Talley's match-winner came off an assist from Tia Stovall, who also tied a school record. Stovall had the assist on all three of Talley's goals in the match. Talley recorded the first hat trick since Danielle Ayala recorded one against Missouri Western on Oct. 19, 2007. Jessica Mainz owns the other two school hat tricks. SBU took the lead to start the match on Nycole Henderson's unassisted goal at the 16:37 mark of the match. Talley knotted the score at 1-1 in the 33rd minute of the match.
Lauren Henry put Washburn up 2-1 on an assist from Ashley Taylor in the 59th minute, however SBU tied the score in the 65th minute on a goal by Kelly Isaac. Talley put Washburn up 3-2 on one of Stovall's three assists at the 73:33 mark of the match, but the lead was short-lived as SBU's Heidi Lewis tied the score less than three minutes later. Talley's match-winner came at the 85:12 mark beating SBU's goalkeeper Megan Link for the go-ahead goal on Stovall's assist. Ashley Klone picked up the win in net with three saves.
Washburn and SBU each had eight shots and 11 fouls.

Lady Blues Soccer History:
Washburn is 64-47-21 (.560) all-time in its seventh season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 42-34-16 (.537). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 29-16-9 and they are 28-26-9 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-5-3.
