Washburn soccer team to open MIAA slate with Jennies on Saturday night

Setting the Scene:
The Lady Blues soccer team will open MIAA play as they travel to Warrensburg, Mo., to take on the Central Missouri Jennies. The Lady Blues are 2-1-0 this season after topping Newman 2-1 in double overtime last time out on Sept. 6 in Wichita. The Jennies are 1-2-1 this season and will have its MIAA lid-lifter on Sept. 10 when they play host to Missouri Southern.

Match Four | Central Missouri Jennies
Team notes: The Jennies are 1-2-1 this season entering Thursday's match with Missouri Southern. On Sept. 6, the Jennies picked up their first win of the season topping No. 16-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce 1-0.
About the coach: Lewis Theobald is in his third season at the helm of the Jennies soccer program. He has posted a 29-10-7 overall mark. He was the first assistant at Division I Indiana State where he was the lead recruiter before coming to UCM. He is a 1999 graduate of the University of Kansas.
Series history with the Jennies:  The Jennies lead the all-time series 7-4-1 and have won the last two in a row. They have outscored the Lady Blues 13 to 10 in the 12 meetings. The last five matches have been decided by 1-0 scores and the last seven matches have been decided by one goal. Three of the matches have gone into overtime and one has gone into double overtime.
About the Jennies: Kayla Jupp and Sharaya Sidebottom have scored the two goals for the Jennies this season. Melanie Hall has attempted a team-high 18 shots with 11 shots on goal.
Last meeting with the Jennies: (Sept. 25, 2008) WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- For the second time in less than a week the Washburn Lady Blues soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Central Missouri. The Lady Blues' record falls to 4-4-1 and 1-3 in the MIAA.
After a scoreless first half, the Jennies' Hazel Cox scored the only goal of the match 57 seconds into the half in what would be the only goal they would need for the win.
Washburn held a 4-2 advantage in the first half in shots while the Jennies outshot Washburn 7-2 in the second half and 9-6 for the match.
Ashley Klone had four saves in goal for the Lady Blues. Traci Nigg had the only two shots on goal for the Lady Blues, who went without a shot on goal in the first half.
The teams combined for 24 fouls with the Lady Blues committing 14. Washburn did have a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Last time out for the Lady Blues:
Sept. 6 - WICHITA, Kan. – Leah Talley scored the golden goal 15 seconds into the second overtime to give Washburn a 2-1 win over Newman Sunday evening in Wichita.
The match-winning goal came at the 100:15 mark of the match on an assist from Markie Gallagher as she beat the keeper 3-yards into the right corner of the net.
Neither team scored in the first half when the Jets' Lauren Wilson scored the first one of the match in the 47th minute. The Lady Blues were held scoreless until Danielle Sicard scored in the 85th minute on an assist from Ashley Taylor and Tia Stovall from 7-yards out into the left corner.
Ashley Klone picked up the win in net for the Lady Blues picking up six saves. Washburn outshot the Jets 15 to 13 and each team had four corner kicks.
Stovall had four shots to lead Washburn with two shots on goal. Lauren Henry also had two shots on goal.

Blue Notes:
Talley Points: Freshman Leah Talley leads the Lady Blues with four points … two of her three shots on goal have hit the back of the net.
Oh Henry: Sophomore Lauren Henry has recorded seven goals and three assists for 17 points after her first season in a Lady Blues uniform. The 17 points was the second-best total by a freshman in school history as well as her seven goals.
Taylor Made: Senior Ashley Taylor is the team's leading returning scorer this season coming off her seven goal, five assist campaign from her junior season. She has scored 12 goals with 14 assists in her career having played in 66 matches with 30 starts including 20 last season. This season Taylor has a goal and an assist.
Klone in goal: Junior goalkeeper Ashley Klone  will need to find a way to stay healthy this season as she is the only keeper on the Lady Blues' roster. She has compiled a 16-9-3 record in net for Washburn with eight shutouts and a goal against average of 1.00.
Sicard back in action: Junior Danielle Sicard defender is penciled in as a defender after missing the final five matches of the season after suffering a knee injury. She earned second team all-MIAA honors despite missing nearly a quarter of the season.

Lady Blues Soccer History:
Washburn is 62-44-21 (.560) all-time in its seventh season of competing. In MIAA play, the Lady Blues are 39-30-16 (.537). In home matches, the Lady Blues are 27-16-9 and they are 28-23-9 on the road. In matches on neutral sites, the Lady Blues are 7-5-3.

Following the match with the Jennies, the Lady Blues will take on Truman on Sept. 17. Following the match with the Bulldogs, they will take on Missouri Western on Sept. 19 in St. Joseph before taking on Central Missouri again for the second time in 12 days on Sept. 24 in the home opener beginning a four-match home stand which will include battles against MIAA foes Southwest Baptist and Missouri Southern and a non-conference clash against Rockhurst on Sept. 30.
