Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods (7-8, 1-7 MIAA) will travel to Pittsburg State on Wednesday to take on the Gorillas (7-7, 1-6 MIAA) before returning to Topeka for a three-game homestand beginning with Emporia State on Jan. 16 wrapping up the first half of the MIAA schedule. The Ichabods will then play six of their final nine regular season games at home. The Ichabods are looking to put a five-game losing slide avoiding their sixth-straight loss which would be the longest losing streak since a six-game stretch during the 2005-06 season from Dec. 18, 2005 to Jan. 18 2006.

Bruce Steinbrock will be the play-by-play voice of the Ichabods and former WU quarterback Mark Elliott will be the color analyst. Pregame show starts 15 minutes prior to tip.
The Coaches. . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 669-272 (.716) overall and he has 421 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 44-16 against Pittsburg State.
Pittsburg State head coach Gene Iba is 259-161 in his 15th and final year at PSU having announced his retirement at the end of the current season. He is 485-364 in his 30th year overall.
Last time out for the Ichabods . . .
(Jan. 9, 2010) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods were topped 86-69 by Missouri Southern Saturday night in Lee Arena dropping the Ichabods to 7-8, 1-7 MIAA.
Washburn jumped out to an early 6-0 on back-to-back-to-back field goals by William McNeill, but Missouri Southern (9-5, 2-5 MIAA) would used a 16-5 run over the next eight minutes to build a 28-17 lead with just over nine minutes to play in the opening half. The Ichabods trimmed the lead back to seven at 34-27 with 329 to play in the half on a 3-pointer by
Nate Daniels, but the Lions used another run, this time 11 to 5 the rest of the half to take a 45-32 lead into the break.
The Lions heated up from their 44 percent shooting in the first half to 57 percent in the second half hitting 13 of 23 shots while hitting 13 of 17 free throw attempts in the half stretching the lead to as many as 28 at the 11:48 mark leading to the 17-point win as the Ichabods would get no closer than 16 at the 1:28 mark of the half at 82-66 on a 3-pointer by
Maurice Colter.
McNeill led the Ichabods with 18 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the field while collecting two of the five steals for Washburn. Daniels scored 11 off the bench hitting 4 of 6 attempts with two three points and
De'Andre Washington scored 10 points with team-highs of six rebounds and four assists.
Patrick Hester scored 16 to lead the Lions while Jason Adams scored 14 points with 13 rebounds.
After shooting 56 percent in the first half hitting 14 of 25 attempts, the Ichabods cooled off to 13 of 33 in the second half for a 39 percent average finishing the game at 46 percent connecting on 27 of 58 attempts. The Lions were 28 of 57 for the game for a 49 percent average.
The Lions held a 37 to 34 advantage on the glass. The Ichabods also had 16 turnovers leading to 18 points off turnovers for the Lions.
About Pittsburg state . . .
Pittsburg State is 7-7 overall and 1-6 in the MIAA after falling at Emporia State 76-66 on Saturday. The Gorillas are led by Spencer Magana's 18.1 points per game, which is good enough for third in the MIAA. He is averaging 17.9 ppg in MIAA play and his hit 40 of 99 3-point attempts this season. Rodney Grace is the only other Gorilla averaging in double figures this season at 15.3 ppg. JaVon McGee is averaging a team-high 6.8 rebounds. This is the final season for PSU coach Gene Iba, who announced his retirement prior to the start of the season.

(Jan. 9, 2010) EMPORIA, Kan. --Emporia State University used a 16-0 second-half run to claim a 76-66 victory over Pittsburg State University Saturday (Jan. 9) at W.L. White Auditorium.
The Gorillas (7-7, 1-6 MIAA) led 40-34 with 16:33 to play in the game, but the Hornets (7-8, 3-5 MIAA) rattled off 16 straight points to build a 50-40 advantage on Lamar Wilbern's layup with 12:21 remaining.
Pitt State never got any closer than eight points of ESU down the stretch.
Tim Niles and Adam Holthaus combined for 42 points to pace the Hornets, who outscored the Gorillas 32-15 from the foul line in a game marred by 46 combined personal fouls. Niles led all scorers with 26 points, while Holthaus added 16. Dustin Andrews (11) and Wilbern (11) also scored in double figures for ESU.
The Gorillas trailed 30-18 with 2:39 to play in the first half of the contest, but Pitt State outscored the Hornets 13-1 the rest of the way in the initial period to draw even.
Spencer Magana missed his first five shots in the contest, but finished the half 4-for-5 and scored 10 points in Pitt State's late surge. He buried a guarded long-range 3-pointer just ahead of the buzzer, after the Gorillas forced a turnover with five seconds to play in the half.
Rodney Grace led Pitt State with 26 points and seven rebounds, while Magana added 18 points before fouling out with 4:34 to play in the game.
Series Notes with Pittsburg State . . .
This is the 162nd meeting between the two schools and Washburn leads the series, 89-72. The Ichabods swept the season series last year. The Ichbabods are 24-2 in Lee Arena against PSU and 21-12 against the Gorillas in MIAA play. The home team is 22-5 in the last 27 regular season meetings, dating back to 1996-97. Last Meeting with Pittsburg State . . .
(Feb. 21, 2009) -- PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods turned back a late-game rally by the Pittsburg State Gorillas taking an 80-69 win improving to 15-11 on the season and 11-8 in the MIAA.
The Ichabods led 39-24 at the break after holding the Gorillas to 9 of 25 shooting from the field while hitting 16 of 39 of their own shots for a 41 percent average. William McNeil sparked the 15-point halftime cushion scoring 10 points off the bench hitting both of the Ichabods 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes.
In the second half, the Gorillas slowly chipped into the Ichabod lead as the Gorillas' Spence Magana scored 21 points hitting five 3-pointers in the second half, including a long-range shot which cut the Ichabod lead to two at 62-60 with 6:36 to play. However it would be as close as the Gorillas would get as Washburn's
Nate Daniels hit a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws sandwiching a set of charity tosses by James Williams pushing the Ichabods back to a nine point lead at 69-60 with 4:22 to go as Washburn held on for the 11-point win hitting their final five free throw attempts with Williams starting the streak converting a conventional 3-point play as the Gorillas had trimmed the margin back to six.
The Ichabods were led by DeAndre Eggins who scored 17 points on 7 of 9 shooting from the field to go along with eight rebounds and eight assists. Lekheythan Malone recorded a double double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. McNeil also finished with 13 points. Williams scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half and Darnell Kimble finished with 10 points.
The Ichabods hit 14 of 25 attempts in the second half (.560) and finished 30 of 64 for the game. The Ichabods dominated on the glass outrebounded the Gorillas 46 to 22 coming up with 19 offensive rebounds leading to 22 second change points. Washburn also outscored the Gorillas 36 to 12 in the paint and 27 to 10 in bench points.
