Setting the scene . . .
The Washburn Ichabods (8-8, 2-7 MIAA) return to Topeka for a three-game homestand beginning with Emporia State on Jan. 16 for round one of the Turnpike Tussle wrapping up the first half of the MIAA schedule. The Ichabods will then play six of their final 10 regular season games at home. The Ichabods snapped a five-game losing streak with their 62-54 win at Pittsburg State on Wednesday. The Hornets have not played since Jan. 9 win over the Gorillas in Emporia winning 76-66.

The Coaches. . .
Washburn Ichabod head basketball coach
Bob Chipman is in his 31st season at the helm of the Ichabod basketball program. For 24 years now Chipman has been the winningest coach in school history and in 2006-07 he became the second winningest coach as a member of the MIAA. Chipman is 670-272 (.716) overall and he has 422 wins since the Ichabods joined the MIAA - the most of any teams in the league since the 1991-92 season. Chipman is 44-19 against Emporia State.
Emporia State head coach David Moe is 139-105 in his ninth season at ESU and is 131-86 since 2002-03. He led ESU to appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2004 and 2007 and winning seasons in seven of the last eight years. He is the third winningest coach in ESU history behind Gus Fish and Ron Slaymaker.

(Jan. 13, 2010) PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Ichabods snapped a five-game losing streak as
Logan Stutz returned to the Washburn line up scoring 17 points with 13 coming in the second half as Washburn topped Pittsburg State 62-54.
The Ichabods (8-8, 2-7 MIAA) held the Gorillas without a field goal for 9:58 in the second half as Pittsburg State (7-8, 1-7 MIAA) finished the half 8 of 24 in the final stanza.
Stutz had not appeared in a game since the Dec. 28th loss to Missouri Western in Topeka, but returned to lead the Ichabods with 17 points off the bench hitting 7 of 9 shots from the field.
De'Andre Washington recorded his fifth double double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Maurice Colter scored nine points while dishing out a game-high six assists.
Rodney Grace led the Gorillas wit 25 points hitting 8 of 11 attempts from the field. Spencer Magana scored all 15 of his points in the first half.
The bench scored 31 of the Ichabods' 62 points on the night while turning the ball over only twice in the final 20 minutes.
The Ichabods outshot the Gorillas 42 percent to 40 percent as the Ichabods hit 23 of 55 attempts while Gorillas were 17 of 43. Washburn had 17 assists on 23 field goals and out rebounded the Gorillas 34 to 32. After going 4 of 10 from the free throw line in the first half, the Ichabods were a perfect 9 of 9 from the charity stripe in the second half. The Gorillas finished the game 16 of 30 from the stripe.
The win was the fourth straight in the series over the Gorillas as Washburn improved to 90-72 all-time against Pitt State. The home team improved to 23-5 in the last 28 teams.
About Emporia State . . .
Emporia State is 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the MIAA after topping at Pittsburg State 76-66 on Saturday. The Hornets have been off since then. Against the Gorillas, the Hornets snapped a three-game losing streak all on the road falling at Nebraska-Omaha, Southwest Baptist and Missouri Southern. Overall the Hornets are 1-5 in true road games this season picking up the win at Northwest Missouri 86-81. The are 2-0 in neutral site games. Tim Niles leads the Hornets in scoring with a 17.5 ppg average. Adam Holthaus is scoring 14.5 ppg. ESU is averaging 81.0 ppg while allowing 77.7 ppg. They are +2.4 in rebound margin this year while hitting 126 of 326 3-point attempts for a 39 percent average.

(Jan. 9, 2010) EMPORIA, Kan. -- In a game of runs, Emporia State had the decisive one in a 76-66 victory over Pittsburg State on Saturday night in White Auditorium. Tim Niles led ESU with 26 points as four Hornets scored in double figures.
The Hornets jumped out to a 10-4 lead and led 31-18 with 2:39 left in the first half. The Gorillas then scored the final 13 points of the half to tie it at 31-31 on Spencer Magana's three at the buzzer. PSU then pushed the lead to 40-34 at the 16:35 mark. ESU responded with a 16-0 run jump started by four points by Tim Niles to take a 50-40 lead with 12:21 left in the game. The Hornets would match their biggest lead of the game at 14 with 1:27 left. Rodney Grace scored eight straight for PSU in 42 seconds to cut the lead to eight with 45 seconds left. Matt Boswell then scored the final four points for ESU to secure the win.
Niles was joined in double figures by Adam Holthaus with 16, and Dustin Andrews and Lamar Wilbern with 11 points each. Boswell had a career high 11 rebounds for ESU.
Series Notes with Emporia State . . .
Saturday's meeting will be the 192nd meeting between these two schools with ESU holding a slim 96-95 lead after taking both regular season meetings during the 2008-09 season with the Ichabods winning the first round MIAA tournament match up. ESU has won eight of the past nine meetings. This is the most-played series for Washburn. The two teams started the series in 1905-06, Washburn's first recorded year of basketball, and they have met every year since the 1945-46 season. This will be the 65th straight year they have played each other at least once. Washburn is 25-29 all-time in White Auditorium since home-away records were first kept beginning in 1956-57. ESU has won the last four meetings in Emporia and six of the last seven. Prior to that, Washburn was 14-2 in the last 16 away games. The Ichabods are 18-7 against the Hornets in Lee Arena. Washburn is 23-11 against ESU in MIAA games. Washburn is 3-0 against ESU in MIAA Postseason tournament games.
Last Meeting with Emporia State . . .
(March 5, 2009) -- KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods rallied from an 11-point deficit early in the second half to defeat Emporia State 88-82 in the First Round of the MIAA Postseason Tournament on Thursday night at Municipal Auditorium. Washburn outscored ESU 53-39 in the second half to rally for the win.
A defensive battle in the early going, Washburn (16-12, 11-9 MIAA) led 19-15 with just over eight minutes gone by when the Hornets (18-10, 12-8 MIAA) went on an 18-3 run to open an 11-point advantage. The lead hovered around 10 for the remainder of the half before a three by
Nate Daniels drew the Ichabods within eight at 43-35 heading into the intermission.
The Hornets pushed the lead back to 10 in the early part of the second half, but an 18-8 run by Washburn tied the game at 53 with just over 11 minutes remaining. ESU regained the lead with a quick 5-0 run, but the Ichabods responded once more. A trey by Paul Byers ignited a 15-2 run that gave Washburn the lead for good at 70-62. The Ichabods led by nine, but Emporia State was able to cut the lead to three at 81-78 with a half a minute to play. WU connected on 7-of-8 free throw attempts to ice the game.
DeAndre Eggins and Lekheythan Malone led five Ichabods in double figures with 20 points apiece. Eggins also had a game-high nine rebounds and seven assists. James Williams poured in 14 points, while Byers and William McNeill chipped in 13 and 12, respectively. Washburn outrebounded the Hornets 36-27 and made 35-of-41 foul shots compared to 15 for Emporia State.
