Ichabods push No. 1 Mules in 6-point road loss

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- Washburn's De'Andre Washington recorded his fourth double double in the last five games but it wasn't enough as the Ichabods led the No. 1-ranked Central Missouri Mules with less than six minutes to go before falling 77-71. The Ichabods will be back in action on Tuesday wrapping up a three-game road trip all against nationally-ranked teams when they will face Southwest Baptist.

Washburn (7-6, 1-5 MIAA) led by one at 56-55 before the Mules' Bryce Brunz hit a free throw tying the score for the 11th tie score of the game. The Mules (12-0, 5-0 MIAA) would push the lead to as many as nine at 74-65 with 26 seconds to play before back-to-back 3-pointers by Washington and Virgil Philistin trimmed the lead to five with four seconds to play but would get not closer  the Mules hit their last free throw of the afternoon.

The Ichabods trailed by six at the break after shooting 47 percent from the field hitting 14of 30 shots from the field. Washburn led by as many as seven in the opening stanza at 29-22 on a 3-pointer by Maurice Colter with 6:31 to play.

Washington finished with 26 points, his second-best output of the season, with 12 rebounds while tying a career-high with six assists playing 39 minutes. He was the only Ichabod to reach double figures. Bryce Simons scored a career-high nine points. Philistin had nine points as well off the bench for Washburn.

Sanjay Watts scored 28 points with 14 rebounds to pace the Mules. Alex Moosmann scored 20 with eight assists.

Washburn finished 27 of 64 from the field for a 42 percent average while the Mules were 24 of 48 hitting half of their attempts. The Ichabods were 10 of 15 from the free throw line while Central Missouri finished 24 of 49 outscoring the Ichabods by 14.

The Ichabods were outrebounded 36 to 34 but did have 14 offensive rebounds leading to 16 second chance points. Washington had six offensive boards. The Ichabods also recorded a season low of five turnovers.
